Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Albrecht of Prussia (* May 8, 1837 in Berlin ; † September 13, 1906 at Kamenz Castle , Lower Silesia) was a Prussian Field Marshal General , from 1885 until his death Regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig and from 1883 Lord Master of the Order of St. John .

Life

Albrecht was the son of Prince Albrecht of Prussia (1809–1872), the brother of Kaiser Wilhelm I and King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, and his first wife, Princess Marianne of Orange and Nassau (1810–1883), daughter of the King Wilhelm I of the Netherlands and Queen Wilhelmine, nee Princess of Prussia . After his parents divorced, his father married Rosalie Countess von Hohenau, née von Rauch, in a second morganatic marriage .

He joined the Prussian Army in 1847 . In 1864 he took part in the campaign in Schleswig at the headquarters of Prince Friedrich Karl . In 1866 he successfully took part in the battles at Skalitz , Schweinschädel and Königgrätz as commander of the 1st Guards Cavalry Brigade . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he commanded the 2nd Guards Cavalry Brigade and took part in the battles at Gravelotte and Sedan . On December 24th, he and his soldiers joined General von Manteuffel's army and took part in the operations around Bapaume . For the operations on the Somme in January 1871 he was entrusted with the supreme command of several regiments and was involved in the Battle of Saint-Quentin on January 19, 1871.

After the peace treaty he was promoted to lieutenant general and took over command of the 20th division in May 1871 . On December 12, 1873, he was appointed commanding general of the X Army Corps in Hanover , a position he held until mid-1888. As early as 1883 he was also elected master master of the Order of St. John, an office that he held until 1906.

In 1885, the Brunswick State Assembly elected him regent of the Duchy of Brunswick, as the candidate Ernst August , Duke of Cumberland, was prevented from taking office by Bismarck . In Braunschweig he financed the reconstruction of Dankwarderode Castle and had the Prince Albrecht Park named after him laid out, where a memorial (see list of monuments and statues of the city of Braunschweig ) commemorates him. He also promoted the establishment of the Vaterländisches Museum (now the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum ).

Honors

He was awarded high war decorations: the order Pour le Mérite with oak leaves , Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class and a. The Dutch King Wilhelm III. made him Commander in the exclusive Military Wilhelms Order as part of his marriage . On May 8, 1847 he received the Order of the Black Eagle .

The Albrechtshaus lung sanatorium created by the Braunschweig State Insurance Institute near Stiege in the Upper Harz Mountains was named after the Braunschweig regent.

The Albrecht apple, which was widespread in earlier times, goes back to him. The apple variety Prince Albrecht of Prussia was discovered in 1865 by C. Braun, court gardener of the prince in Kamenz in Silesia , as a seedling by Emperor Alexander and Baumanns Renette . This local, Silesian variety was very popular in this area at the time and suitable for cultivation in mountainous areas. It is also grown in Germany and Central Europe, where it is considered an old variety that is ideal for home gardens. Today the original name Prince Albrecht of Prussia can also be found on the tree nursery signs.

On April 19, 1873 Albrecht married Marie von Sachsen-Altenburg (1854–1898), daughter of Duke Ernst I von Sachsen-Altenburg and his wife Princess Agnes von Anhalt-Dessau , with whom he had three children:
