Aleksandrs Kerčs (born March 16, 1967 in Arkhangelsk , Russian SFSR ) is a former Latvian ice hockey player and current coach .

Career

Aleksandrs Kerčs began his career as an ice hockey player at Dinamo Riga , for whose professional team he participated in the Vysschaya League , the highest Soviet division, from 1984 to 1992 . In the 1992/93 season he was on the ice for Riga, which had changed the club name several times within a few years, in the newly founded International Hockey League . In this IHL premiere year he was able to convince with 40 scorer points, of which 24 goals, in a total of 44 games for Riga. With the second team from Pārdaugava Riga he was also Latvian champion in 1993 . In the 1993 NHL Entry Draft , the winger was selected in the third round as a total of 60th player by the Edmonton Oilers , for which he completed a total of five games in the National Hockey League in the 1993/94 season , while he spent the rest of the season in their Farm team Cape Breton Oilers spent in the American Hockey League . For Cape Breton he scored 24 goals and 38 assists in 57 games.

In the 1994/95 season , Kerčs changed clubs several times. During this season he ran for Pārdaugava Riga in the International Hockey League, the Providence Bruins in the AHL and the EHC Biel in the Swiss National League A , before he bridged the following season at Riga / Alianse in Latvia. In the 1996/97 season he scored 96 points, including 42 goals, in 51 games for EV Landsberg in the second-highest German division. This enabled him to recommend himself for a contract with the Finnish SM-liiga participant Tappara Tampere . From 1998 to 2001 the Latvian national player played for the Revierlöwen Oberhausen in the German Ice Hockey League . There he was always one of the leading players and took part in the DEL All-Star Game in 1999 , in which he also scored a goal. For the 2001/02 season he moved within the DEL to the Berlin Capitals , for which he scored 15 goals and 19 assists in 56 games. After this then had to withdraw from the DEL for financial reasons, he played in the 2002/03 season for SKA Saint Petersburg in the Russian Super League and HK Riga 2000 in the East European Hockey League .

In the 2003/04 season Kerčs played again for several clubs within a year. He was with the Swedish second division IK Nyköpings Hockey in HockeyAllsvenskan , his EX club HK Riga 2000 in the East European Hockey League, the HK Vilki OP Riga in the Latvian ice hockey league and Molot-Prikamje Perm in the Wysschaja Liga , the second Russian division under contract. The following season was similarly turbulent for the 2002 Olympian. For HK Homel he played in the Belarusian Extraliga , for HK Vilki OP Riga in Latvia and REV Bremerhaven in the 2nd Bundesliga . The 2005/06 season he began with the Russian second division team Chimik Woskressensk and finished it again at HK Vilki OP Riga in Latvia. There he stood ASK / Ogre on the ice from 2006 to 2008 and was one of the top players in the Latvian ice hockey league during this period. Especially in the 2006/07 season he stood out and was the top scorer and top scorer in the league in both the main round and the playoffs. In the 2008/09 season he was active for ASK / Ogre in the Belarusian extra league.

The 2009/10 season Kerčs spent together with his compatriot and long-time teammate Andrejs Ignatovičs at Brest Albatros Hockey in Division 1 , the second French division. For the 2010/11 season, the then 43-year-old returned to Latvia, where he was signed by DHK Latgale . In this, he was able to immediately follow up on his achievements in previous years at ASK / Ogre and was named the league's Most Valuable Player in 2011 . He then ended his active career. Since the 2011/12 season he has been the head coach of HK SMScredit.lv in the Latvian ice hockey league .

International

For the Soviet Union Kerčs took part in the Junior World Championship in 1987 , in which his team was disqualified as well as the opponent due to a mass brawl in the game against Canada . During the tournament itself, he had scored six goals and two assists in six games.

For Latvia , Kerčs took part in the C World Cup in 1993 , the B World Cup in 1996 and the A World Cup in 1997 , 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 and 2004 . He was also in his country's squad at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .
