Alexia Vassiliou or short: Alexia ( Greek : Αλέξια, * 5 February 1964 in Famagusta ) is a Cypriot pop - and jazz singer .

Vassilious first big appearance was as a member of the group Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 1981 , which brought the group the sixth place. In 1982 she recorded the song I am Siam , which entered the US charts . Alexia went to Boston that same year , where she studied at Berklee College of Music . After graduating in 1985, she spent two years in the jazz and fusion scene in New York City , singing with the band Axioum . She had her second appearance at the European Schlager Festival at the Concours Eurovision de la Chanson 1987 inBrussels . Here she reached seventh place with the pop song Aspro mavro . Her debut album Alexia , which was released in 1988, sold more than 500,000 copies in Greece. More than twenty albums have been released so far, some of which have gold or platinum status; In addition to pop music, she also published jazz and improvised music as well as interpretations with classical orchestral arrangements. She also worked with Mikis Theodorakis , Chick Corea , Andreas Vollenweider and Milva .
