The Märkische Oberland is one of the main natural spatial units of the Southern Mountains in the Brandenburg part of the North Rhine-Westphalian Sauerland . It is mainly in the Märkischer Kreis , the northwest in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis and in the (outer) urban area of Hagens .

Two thirds of the area of the main unit is taken up by the Altenaer Saddle , which is parallel to the Ebbe-Homert-Schwelle in the northwest and which reaches 545.9  m on the Iserlohner Höhe in the northeast . The Lüdenscheider Mulde lies between the two thresholds , from which the Kiersper Bay branches off to the south as the western end of the Ebbe Mountains.

The Märkisches Oberland accompanies the lower middle reaches of the Lenne as well as the upper and middle reaches of the Volme and Ennepe , whereby the Lenne and Volme in particular separate the Altenaer Sattel into individual mountain ranges. It is, together with the south-east adjoining and the Ebbe-Homert-Schwelle containing the South Sauerland Uplands , also combined into the main unit of the West Sauerland Oberland .

Location and limits

The Märkische Oberland is segmented by tributaries of the Ruhr that run mainly to the northwest and the most important cities are located on the valleys.

It follows the Lenne from Eiringhausen in the north of Plettenberg to Hohenlimburg in the extreme east of Hagens , with the river temporarily leaving the main unit shortly before the latter location, near Oestrich in the west of Iserlohn .

To the west of the Lenne, the Volme flows through the main unit from its source in the southeast of Meinerzhagen to above (Hagen-) Delstern . In the far west, its left tributary, the Ennepe, flanks the area from the source southeast of Halvers via the Ennepetalsperre to Gevelsberg , which it subsequently frames to the north-west as far as Hagen.

In the east, the main unit is drained by the upper reaches of the Hönne near Neuenrade and, further north, by the system from its left tributary Oese above or south of Hemers .

places

The cities and communities, arranged from north to south, are distributed among the main river areas as follows, with places that are only in smaller parts in the Märkisches Oberland in brackets:

Natural structure

The North Sauerland Oberland is structured as follows (in the finer sub-units with two decimal places, individual rivers and towns are linked for better localization):

  • 336 1 .0–5 Altenaer Saddle (440 km²)
  • 336 1 .4 Ihmert plateau
  • 336 1 .5 Iserlohner and Balver Höhenrand

The height of the trains (Remscheid-) Altenaer saddle s extend parallel to the north-west ebb Homert threshold in ostnordöstliche direction. The Lenne separates the Iserlohner Höhe (up to 545.9  m ) south of Iserlohn in the east, which is followed by the Hülscheid plateaus (up to 505.2 m ) around Hülscheid to the west as far as the valley of the Volme , and on both  sides of the Nahmerbach to the north move to Hohenlimburg . Further west follows the Breckerfeld plateau (up to 441  m ) around Breckerfeld , which merges northward into the Hesterthardt (up to 372.2  m ) at the mouth of the Ennepe south of Hagens .

The space between Altenaer Sattel and Ebbe-Homert Schwelle is taken up by the Lüdenscheider Mulde around Lüdenscheid in the south of the main unit. From its western south, the Kiersper Bay branches off at Kierspe along the valley of the Volme upstream to the south to Meinerzhagen and frames the Ebbegebirge to the west.

Individual evidence

  1. a b In sheet 110 - Arnsberg these units are referred to as "units in the area of the (Remscheid-) Altenaer saddle", whereby the Remscheid-Altenaer saddle refers to a geological structural area that goes west to Remscheid and thus clearly beyond the unit. The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation refers to these units as " Altenaer Sattel  ( page no longer available , search in web archivesInfo: The link was automatically marked as defective.
