Assassin's Creed III ( shortly AC III ) is a published in 2012 video game made by Ubisoft . It is the fifth part of the Assassin's Creed series and the third main title. Like its predecessor, the title is from the action adventure genre . Assassin's Creed III was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in October 2012 and for Microsoft Windows and Wii U in November 2012 . On March 29, 2019, a remastered version was released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and in mid-May 2019 for Nintendo Switch .

scenario

As in the previous parts, Assassin's Creed III plays Desmond Miles, who relives the memories of his ancestors using a special machine, the animus. As before, the leitmotif is the eternal conflict between the secret society of the Assassins and the Knights Templar . While the Templars want to control the world in order to bring peace to it, the Assassins want to keep them from doing just that and defend human freedom. Desmond and his ancestors work for the assassins.

In Assassin's Creed III is a new protagonist in the spotlight, Ratonhnhaké: sound called Connor, in his half-British, half- Mohawk -Indianer. The internal plot of Assassin's Creed III takes place during the American Revolution and the resulting War of Independence between 1753 and 1783. As in its predecessors, numerous historical figures appear in the game, including George Washington , Benjamin Franklin , Thomas Jefferson , John Hancock , Samuel Adams , Charles Lee , William Johnson , Israel Putnam , Benjamin Tallmadge , Paul Revere , William Dawes , Samuel Prescott , William Prescott , John Pitcairn , Edward Braddock , King George III. , General Lafayette and Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben .

In the game, the player can explore the cities of Boston and New York City . There is also a large area called the borderland around the cities of Lexington and Concord , where you can hunt animals and complete various side missions. In some missions you can also explore parts of the American east coast by ship.

action

At the beginning of the game, Desmond and his teammates Rebecca, Shaun and his father William enter a temple of the First Civilization, formerly technically highly developed beings who once created humanity as their slave race. They left artefacts, so-called Edensplitter, with which powerful illusions can be created and people can be manipulated. In the temple, Desmond and his companions hope to find new information about the First Civilization in order to prevent the end of the world feared on December 21, 2012. However, a key that was hidden by one of Desmond's ancestors is required to access the interior. To find out where to find it, Desmond climbs into the animus. At the beginning he experiences the story of Haytham Kenway, one of Desmond's ancestors who joined the Templars, how he arrived in North America and recruited new Templars.

Then the player slips into the role of the five-year-old Ratonhnhaké: ton, Haytham's son with the Mohawk Indian Zio (Kaniehí: io). When he is playing hide and seek in the forest, he is found by Charles Lee, one of the recruited Templars, who tries to extract information from him. Back in his village, Ratonhnhaké: ton saw his mother die in the flames. A few years later, Ratonhnhaké: ton meets with the clan mother to find out why his tribe is not fleeing or fighting against the colonists who are taking possession of more and more land. She then shows him a piece of Eden and explains to him that it has always been the task of her tribe to guard this artifact and this land. In Ratonhnhaké: ton, the Eden splinter triggers a vision with the goddess Juno - actually a representative of the First Civilization - in which it is made clear to him that he should join the assassins.

In the person of the old Afro-American Achilles Davenport, Ratonhnhaké: ton is finally initiated into the art of assassins. This gives him the name Connor, after his son who died in the New York fire. As a result, Connor kills one recruited follower of Haytham after another. Haytham and Connor then meet and do a few jobs together and get to know each other better, even if they belong to warring camps. The last surviving follower of Haytham, Charles Lee, hides in a fort. After Connor has conquered the fort, however, he does not meet Lee, but Haytham, whom he then kills in a duel. Connor picks up the trail of the fleeting Lee and after some exertion finally finds him in a tavern, where he now kills him too. Connor then buries the key Lee was carrying in the grave of Achilles' deceased son Connor Davenport.

With this information Desmond travels to Connor Davenport's grave and finds the key. Back in the temple, the barrier opens and the group finds another artifact, a sphere, in front of them. Minerva, another member of the First Civilization, appears to the group and warns Desmond not to free Juno, trapped in the sphere, as she intends to enslave humanity. Juno, on the other hand, predicts a bleak future for Desmond if he listened to Minerva: The solar storm would kill many people, but humanity itself would survive. Desmond would lead people into a new future as their spiritual leader. Many years after his death, however, the people would worship Desmond as a god, instrumentalize him for their own purposes and thus usher in another dark chapter of humanity. If Desmond touched the sphere, humanity would be saved. Desmond decides to free Juno and stop her himself. He sends his companions away to face Juno alone. When he touches the ball, he falls dead to the ground. In a short cutscene, a news anchor reports on natural disasters occurring worldwide, triggered by the solar storm, but the worst is over. Back at the temple, the freed Juno speaks of the world having been saved, Desmond having played his part, and that it is now time to play hers.

Gameplay

Assassin's Creed III , like its predecessors, is an open world game . Between the missions you can explore the game world, complete side missions or collect items. The integration of side missions into the free world has been improved: Often one only needs to accept a mission once and can then fulfill it at any time; the target will be permanently marked on the map, if possible, and you will be notified of the mission as soon as you are in the vicinity.

The combat system is based on pressing the right button at the right moment to carry out various attacks or to counter an attack. Different approaches are effective for different types of opponents: While one should counter attacks with one opponent, it may make more sense for another to disarm him and then attack or push him into an environmental object. Attacking opponents are marked with an arrow above their head, the currently targeted opponent is highlighted with a white shimmer. However, you have to find out the right timing for key presses yourself through practice. The weapon arsenal has been adapted: In addition to the series-typical hidden blades on the forearm, which can also be used as knives, and conventional weapons such as swords and axes, you carry a tomahawk, one, and later two, pistols and a bow and arrow. You also have knives attached to ropes, with which you can pull opponents towards you or even hang them from trees, poison arrows, booby traps and smoke bombs.

The search system has been expanded: While in the previous parts you could only either be searched or not searched, there are now three levels of tracking; With each level, guards become more vigilant, at the last level even more guards and a special type of enemy are used. While crime rises the search status, removing search posters and bribing town cutters and printers can lower it.

The goods system has been revised: You are the master of a small settlement for which you can recruit residents. These in turn offer missions for which you are rewarded with expansion of the relevant company. You can buy or collect raw materials and have them processed by the inhabitants of the settlement into trade goods, which you can then sell for profit to previously visited traders in the game world using convoys. Capacity upgrades (for ammunition etc.) and certain weapons can also be produced in this way. For all manufacturing processes you need plans that you can either find in the game world or receive as a mission reward.

The recruitment system is also returning: The Templars are active in different ways in each of the three districts of the two cities, for example by forcibly recruiting men, manipulating dealer prices or promoting the spread of epidemics. If you stop these efforts in side missions and thus “liberate” the district, the person in question joins the Order of Assassins and brings with them a special ability, such as stir up a riot or lay an ambush. You can also send the recruits on missions in the various colonies, which also frees them from the Templar influence and the recruits gain experience and can rise in rank.

The hunting system is new: the protagonist can hunt animals in the borderland to get furs and other valuable items. These can then be processed in the settlement or sold directly. When hunting, one can follow clues to pick up tracks, sneak up through bushes or over trees to potential prey, or set traps. From time to time you will be attacked by animals yourself, these fights run as quick-time events and vary in difficulty depending on the attacker.

development

The development of Assassin's Creed III began immediately after the release of Assassin's Creed II in 2009. In 2010, Jean-François Boivin of Ubisoft stated that in each main part of the series, a new main character and a new environment would occur. On November 8, 2011, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot announced that a new Assassin's Creed would be released in 2012.

In January 2012 , details of the upcoming Assassin's Creed became known , apparently through an information leak at Ubisoft , including the location of the title during the American Revolution.

In February 2012, Ubisoft finally officially announced the release of Assassin's Creed III , with a release date in North America set for October 30, 2012. On March 1, 2012, Ubisoft released the official packaging theme and confirmed that the game was set during the American Revolution.

A detailed presentation of Assassin's Creed III took place on March 5, 2012 in the form of a trailer. Ubisoft described the game as the "most ambitious" project in the company's history, as it will be implemented with twice the production capacity compared to its predecessors. The game will be developed with a new engine called AnvilNext , for improved visualization, character models and better artificial intelligence. The new engine should also make battlefields full of soldiers possible.

At E3 2012 , more details and the Wii-U version of the game were presented. The player can use gestures to switch weapons and the map can be viewed on the Wii-U gamepad at any time . Details on the multiplayer mode have also been released; this should have twelve sub-modes, and it should be possible to play soldiers of the English military and female characters.
