Atrox is a Norwegian progressive metal band from Trondheim , which was founded in 1988 under the name Suffocation . She has played with other bands like Equinox , Edge of Sanity , Conception , Witchhammer and Godsend .

history

The band was founded in 1988 under the name Suffocation, recorded two demos under this name and changed the name to Atrox in 1990. Two more demos were recorded. In 1996 the band reached a deal with Danza Ipnotica and Head Not Found . EP Silence the Echoes was released in 1997 on Danza Ipnotica, the debut album called Mesmerized on Head Not Found in the same year.

In 1998 the band signed a contract with Season of Mist , which was followed by some changes in the line-up. The album Contentum was released in 1999. Several appearances followed the release. The band then wrote material for a new album, resulting in Terrestrials , which was released in 2001. Then the band reached a contract with Code 666 Records , which was followed by another change in the line-up. In 2003 the album Orgasm was released. This was followed by appearances with Katatonia , Arcturus , Entombed , Danzig , Red Harvest , Madder Mortem and The Haunted . On April 12, 2007, the band signed another contract with Season of Mist.

The album Binocular was released in 2008 through Season of Mist.

style

In Slayer , the difficult passages were described as “ok” on one of her rehearsal room recordings in 1991 , but the fast passages were “a bit mixed up”; the band should play a new demo recording in the studio. 1997 brought Metalion , editor of Slayer - fanzines , their debut album Mesmerized on Head Not Found out.

According to the description of the then singer and keyboardist Monika Edvardsen, who is the younger sister of the 3rd-and-the-Mortal singer Ann-Mari Edvardsen, “over time , the music developed from classic death metal to doom / death with atmospheric bonds up to what we call 'Schizo Metal' today. This includes numerous experimental influences and keeps a wide range of styles open to us. ”On their Myspace page, the band Arcturus, Ulver , Ved Buens Ende , Manes , Sepultura , Pain , productions by Tim Burton , Fields of the Nephilim , Paradise Lost , Silverbullit , Aryeon , the books by Stephen King , Faith No More , Mr. Bungle , Peeping Tom , Meshuggah , Killing Joke , Peccatum , Rammstein , Frank Zappa , Dødheimsgard , Voivod , Cynic , Aghora , The 3rd and the Mortal , In the Woods … , Fear of God , The Gathering , Madder Mortem, Devil Doll , Anathema , Katatonia, My Dying Bride , Diamanda Galás and Red Harvest as their main influences. Frederik Pankalla from Metalnews wrote in his review of Binocular that the album served "mainly fans of AND OCEANS , WATCHTOWER or THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN ", but also appeals to listeners from outside the genre . He compared the use of the keyboard to that of Ayreon and Cradle of Filth , the singing of Headrush Helmet to that of Evergrey and the atmosphere of the song to that of The Vision Bleak . Monika Edvardsen's singing was considered characteristic of Atrox, but for some listeners it was “too wacky, bizarre and intense […] But people for whom music is a challenge love the singing and that's exactly what we wanted to achieve. In fact, from time to time I sing horribly on purpose. But the question is always what one perceives as terrible, because something ugly can sometimes be beautiful too. I just wanted to translate different emotions into the music. My intention is to confuse people and arouse their curiosity so that they will ask questions and start thinking for themselves. There is definitely a point behind everything I do. "
