Axel Schimpf (born October 1, 1952 in Speyer ) is a Vice Admiral a. D. of the German Navy .

Military career

Axel Schimpf joined the German Navy in 1971 as an officer candidate for Crew X / 71 . After training as an officer, he became second officer on watch in 1975 on the Habicht speedboat in the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader in Olpenitz . From 1978 to 1981 he was in command of the S-45 speedboat in the 3rd Schnellbootgeschwader in Flensburg - Mürwik . From 1982 to 1983 he took part in a course of the Dutch Navy to become a navigation and operations officer. He held the function of ship operations officer from 1983 to 1985 on the destroyer Lütjens .

From 1985 to 1987 he took part in the admiral staff training at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and then became first officer of the destroyer Lütjens . From 1989 to 1990 he was a senior officer in the Navy . He was then adjutant to the Federal Minister of Defense, Gerhard Stoltenberg . From 1992 to 1994 Schimpf was in command of the destroyer Lütjens and then in command of the 2nd frigate squadron in Wilhelmshaven .

From 1996 to 1997, Schimpf was head of the planning department at the Federal Ministry of Defense and then Plans and Policy Division-Action Officer and coordinator for force planning in the NATO International Military Staff in Brussels. From 2000 to 2002 Schimpf headed the operations department in the fleet command in Glücksburg . From there, he became Deputy Chief of design, planning and management in the corporate office of the Navy (Fo M). There he became deputy of the inspector of the navy and chief of staff Fü M in 2004. From January 2008 to April 2010 he was head of the naval office in Rostock . He handed this command over to Flotilla Admiral Horst-Dieter Kolletschke .

On April 28, 2010, Schimpf took over the post of Inspector of the Navy from Vice Admiral Wolfgang E. Nolting during a ceremony at the Mürwik Naval School in Flensburg and was appointed Vice Admiral a few days later. On October 28, 2014, it was adopted by the Federal Minister of Defense, Ursula von der Leyen . In his honor, a big tattoo was also celebrated at the Mürwik Naval School on that day . Schimpf officially retired on October 31, 2014. Vice-Admiral Andreas Krause took over his position as inspector of the Navy .
