Bahía Blanca is located at the southwestern end of the pampa húmeda (humid pampas), the landscape merges here into the dry pampas in the west and into the Patagonian Monte landscape in the south. history

Bahía Blanca slowly developed in the 19th century from a settlement that was established after an expedition in 1823. It remained a lonely outpost for a long time, as most of the territory around it was still ruled by Indian tribes. In 1831 the city was a stopover on Charles Darwin's journey with the HMS Beagle , which led to the development of the theory of evolution. In 1869 the city had 2,000 inhabitants. In the following years, the city developed into a service center and port for the surrounding farms. In 1882 a railway line to Buenos Aires was inaugurated, and from there the city quickly developed into an important export port.

At the turn of the century in 1900, many immigrants from Europe settled here, so that the population grew rapidly. After a short period of stagnation from 1940 onwards, the petrochemical industry was established in Bahía Blanca around 1960.

In 1934 the Roman Catholic diocese of Bahía Blanca was established and in 1957 elevated to the archbishopric of Bahía Blanca . The Nuestra Señora de la Merced de Bahía Blanca Cathedral was built at the beginning of the 20th century and was finally completed in 1929.

Attractions

Banco Nación

In the city center there are several magnificent buildings from the turn of the century, which are kept in the style of neoclassicism and Art Nouveau : the theater, the building of the Banco Nación, the Palace of Justice and the town hall. The cathedral is designed in a neo-colonial style.

Economy and Transport

The petrochemical industry, in which Bahía Blanca is the leading location in Argentina, and the port of Ingeniero White determine the city's economy, although its importance as a commercial center has declined somewhat today.

The Ruta Nacional 3 runs through Bahía from Buenos Aires to the extreme south of the country. The Ruta Nacional 22 , which leads to Zapala in western Argentina , also begins in the city .

education

Bahía Blanca has a regional faculty of the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional , a university in Argentina specializing in engineering. The Facultad Regional Bahía Blanca (FRBB) opened in 1954 and has over 2000 students.

In 1956 the Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS) was founded in Bahía Blanca . Over 20,000 students attend the 16 different faculties of the US.
