Ginobili started his professional career at the Andino Sport Club in La Rioja in the 1995-1996 season. A year later he was sent by his team to the Estudiantes de Bahia Blanca. He played for his hometown team until the Italian league noticed him. From 1998 to 2000 he played for Basket Viola Reggio Calabria. In 1999 he took part in the NBA Draft and was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs with the 57th pick, but he did not sign a contract with the NBA team at the time . Ginobili chose Kinder Bologna and played in the Italian league for two more years. With his new team he won the Italian championship and the Euroleague in 2001 and the Italian Cup in 2001 and 2002. After winning the Euroleague, he was named Final Four MVP . In the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons he was also elected MVP of the Italian league.

San Antonio Spurs (since 2002)

Ginobili signed his first contract with the San Antonio Spurs only after the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2002, where he was elected to the All-Tournament Team along with Yao Ming , Dirk Nowitzki and Peja Stojaković . In his first NBA season, 2002-2003, he came behind Steve Smith from the bench.
