The Eppstein station (sometimes referred to as Eppstein (Taunus) ) was laid out by the Hessian Ludwigsbahn as part of the construction of the Main-Lahn-Bahn and initially received a temporary reception building . The total length of the line was opened on October 15, 1877 by the Hessian Ludwig Railway. Today it is a stop of the S-Bahn line S2 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Main .
Track systems
Due to the location of the route in the narrow Lorsbach valley and the resulting topographical constraints, in particular the Eppstein tunnel , the station came to be on the side of the Schwarzbach opposite the municipality of Eppstein and had to be connected via a bridge . The stream that flowed through the area of the future train station also had to get a new stream bed.
The originally single-track line had a passing track and butt tracks in the station area in order to be able to park vehicles. The southern tracks of the facility were used for freight traffic .
The line was prepared for a second track from the start, but this was not laid until 1914. This meant an expansion for the station area: south of the two main tracks, two overtaking tracks were arranged, in addition to the main platform (track 1) there was now another in an island location with two platform edges (tracks 2 and 3). The track system for freight traffic to the south was also redesigned and a new freight hall was built, which was only demolished during the construction work for the new Eppsteiner Tunnel (2009-2013), although it was a cultural monument . With the S-Bahn line to Niedernhausen in 1978, the route was electrified and the station area at Eppstein was expanded accordingly. With the new Eppstein tunnel, adaptation measures are connected with the tracks that swing in there, which run a little further north than before. The third track was also dispensable and in favor of car parking space, so that the station now only has two platform tracks.
Reception building
The Eppstein station initially received a provisional, single-storey reception building made of half-timbered buildings . There was also a lounge before 1885, which was only demolished in 1971 with the expansion work for the S-Bahn . In 1903 the station building was completely replaced by a historic building. This building had become inoperable in the 1990s and was largely empty for 10 years. On December 19, 2003, the city of Eppstein , the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and Deutsche Bahn AG concluded a framework agreement with which the renovation of the reception building was initiated. The building was bought by the city development and economic development company Eppstein , a company of the city, and renovated for € 2.75 million from 2005. The state of Hesse and the RMV participated in the financing.
When it opened on May 26, 2007, the name Stadtbahnhof was introduced and the entrance was named "Am Stadtbahnhof". Since then, the address of Eppsteiner Bahnhof has been Am Stadtbahnhof 1 . Today the Eppstein Citizens' Office , which also serves as a mobility center, and restaurants are located there .
The station building and the imposing retaining wall of the railway embankment are cultural monuments according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . They are part of the Rhein-Main industrial culture route .
Station of the year 2018
On August 31, 2018, Eppstein station in Berlin was awarded the title “ Station of the Year 2018” by the Alliance Pro Rail . Eppstein station received this award together with Winterberg station (Sauerland / North Rhine-Westphalia). The prize is awarded annually. In 2018, the prize went to Eppstein in particular because gastronomy, tourism and citizen service come into their own here in the smallest of spaces, according to the announcement of the alliance.
