The Bremerhaven – Buxtehude railway is a railway line in the Elbe-Weser triangle in northern Lower Saxony between the cities of Bremerhaven and Buxtehude (there is a connection to Hamburg ) via Bremervörde and Harsefeld .

Today the line between Bremerhaven and Buxtehude is used by the railways and transport company Elbe-Weser (evb) as an operational unit. It was created from three routes:

  1. Bremerhaven– Stade railway line (previously Deutsche Bundesbahn )
  2. Bremervörde – Buchholz railway line in the north heath (Deutsche Bundesbahn)
  3. Buxtehude – Harsefeld railway line ( Buxtehude-Harsefelder Eisenbahn )

history

Railway lines Bremerhaven – Stade and Bremervörde – Buchholz

The Bremervörde – Stade line was opened in 1898 and extended from Bremervörde to Wulsdorf in 1899 . In 1902 the continuation of Bremervörde – Buchholz followed. These were state routes that were taken over by the evb in 1991. Up until this point in time, traffic was offered on the Bremerhaven – Bremervörde – Stade connection, which, in contrast to the connection via Harsefeld, only ran on state railway lines.

Buxtehude – Harsefeld railway line

The line was opened on December 19, 1928 by the Buxtehude-Harsefelder Eisenbahn GmbH (BHE). The 15-kilometer standard-gauge line runs from the city of Buxtehude on the main line Hamburg – Stade – Cuxhaven to Harsefeld on the branch line Bremervörde – Buchholz.

From 1933 onwards, operations were carried out by the Landeskleinbahnamt in Hanover, which later became the Lower Saxony State Railway Office . After its closure, the Osthannoversche Eisenbahnen AG (OHE) took over the operation from 1959 .

Passenger traffic was discontinued on May 31, 1969; however, the Buxtehude - Harsefelder Eisenbahnfreunde eV organized regular trips with the historic WUMAG T 175 multiple unit, which was made by the former Deutsche Reichsbahn .

On September 26, 1993, passenger traffic was resumed by the railways and transport companies Elbe-Weser GmbH (evb) as part of their connection from Hamburg-Neugraben via Bremervörde to Bremerhaven Hauptbahnhof .

Reorientation to Bremerhaven – Buxtehude

With the takeover of the DB routes and the Buxtehude-Harsefelder Eisenbahn (BHE) in 1992, evb owned all routes in the Bremervörde area.

In 1993 the evb stopped passenger traffic between Hesedorf and Stade and continued via Harsefeld and Buxtehude to Hamburg-Neugraben . There was a connection to the S-Bahn line S3 to Hamburg . In December 2007 the S-Bahn was extended via Buxtehude to Stade , since then the evb trains have ended in Buxtehude. Both routes were re-linked in Buxtehude.

The BHE station systems in Buxtehude-Süd have meanwhile given way to a P + R system and bus system for cars from KVG Stade . In Harsefeld-Süd, remains of the systems used today for passenger traffic are still visible, which, according to their condition, are probably still used for goods traffic.

The connection between the former DB and BHE systems was moved south in 1993 to enable direct traffic to Buxtehude. The old northern connection ends at a buffer stop just before today's platforms, the other old connection is overgrown. In 2004 a new connecting curve was built between the former DB and the former BHE line, which made the previous overpass structure superfluous.

Buchholz – Harsefeld railway line

Passenger traffic between Hesedorf and Buchholz was stopped on May 26, 1968, freight traffic only between Hollenstedt and Buchholz, because a new bridge over the newly electrified Hamburg – Bremen railway would have had to be built. Freight traffic between Hollenstedt and Beckdorf was discontinued in 1980 and the last DB AG beet train left between Beckdorf and Harsefeld on August 20, 1991. In 1997, two weeks before the date of the operational closure, a VT 798 rail bus set traveled the route from Harsefeld to Hollenstedt for the last time , partly due to the very poor condition at walking speed. About 100 railway enthusiasts took part in this last trip.

It was dismantled first from Hollenstedt, after the construction of the new bridge also from Harsefeld. The Harsefeld – Buxtehude section was partially rebuilt and used as a section of the Buxtehude line. This shortened the Buxtehude route by around 500 meters.

As a replacement for rail traffic, a Buchholz – Bremervörde bus line was set up, which was taken over by KVG Stade on November 1, 1982 (line 1870). The cross-district traffic was greatly reduced, until finally only the Buchholz – Hollenstedt section in the Harburg district remained.

service

The route has been operated every hour since December 2017. Before, there was only a two-hour service on Sundays. Class 648 ( LINT 41 ) railcars are used . On school days from Monday to Friday, an EVB class 628 multiple unit is used, arriving in Buxtehude at 7:09 a.m.

future

According to a proposal by the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD), the route is to be reactivated for seaport hinterland traffic in the port of Bremerhaven as an alternative to the Y-route and bypassing the overloaded Hamburg-Harburg train station (as part of the so-called alpha variant). The port of Hamburg is to be connected via a new line along federal highway 3 from Trelde. DB welcomed the proposal, while country representatives are rather skeptical that these measures are sufficient.
