history
Like all of Drenthe, the area of this municipality was already inhabited in the Middle Stone Age. Later, Neolithic people built burial mounds and barrows here . The treasure of hatchets is an important deposit found in the late Roman Empire . In the early Middle Ages , "brinkdorpen", Angerdörfer , arose : all around a meadow with a pond (drinking trough ), which was intended for the cattle, was the thatched farms and the village church, for a long time the only stone building in the village. Beyond that lay the fields, and further out the forest. In the museum village of Orvelte , but also in Dwingeloo and Westerbork, you can still recognize this picturesque village image.
East of Hooghalen, near the railway Assen - Hoogeveen , Camp Westerbork, where the Dutch government foreigners, including from the terror of originated in the 1930s, Nazism in Germany escaped Jews , has housed. During the German occupation 1940–1945, this became the Westerbork transit camp . In Bovensmilde, at the end of May 1977, teachers and students were taken hostage in a primary school. The hostage-takers had to let their victims go after weeks of unsuccessful negotiations after military intervention. The television images of the children who were forced by the hostage takers to scream: “Van Agt [name of the Prime Minister at the time], we want to live!” Shocked the whole world. From 1998 to 2000 the community name was "Middenveld".
