The Aarau district is a district in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland . It essentially comprises the agglomeration of Aarau south of the Aargau Jura and the municipality of Densbüren , the former Lower Court of Urgiz. The district comprises 12 municipalities .

The Aarau district roughly comprises the agglomeration of the city of Aarau . It is traversed by the Aare in the north from west to east and by the Suhre and its tributary, the Wyna, from south to north . In the north, the district is bounded by a chain of the Aargau Jura . The area of the district is 104.49 km².
Starting from the north, the Aarau district borders in a clockwise direction on the districts of Laufenburg , Brugg , Lenzburg , Kulm , Zofingen , Olten ( SO ) and Gösgen ( SO ).
