Birgit Bruel

Birgit Thora Marie-Louise Brüel (born October 6, 1927 in Copenhagen , † February 23, 1996 in Gentofte ) was a Danish singer and actress.

Life

Birgit Brüel was the daughter of Hjalmar Thielemann (1883–1964) and Valborg Mariane Hansen (1887–1970). She performed as a singer as a teenager. In 1946 she married Irving Karl Gunsted (1924–1984), from the marriage, which were divorced in 1949, she had a daughter. In 1950 she entered the drama school of the Royal Theater in Copenhagen.

In 1951 she married the architect and jazz musician Max Brüel (1927-1995) and interrupted her training for a year when in 1952 her twin daughters were born. She performed with Brüel's jazz quartet in the 1950s; the marriage with Max Brüel was divorced in 1962.

Despite having three children, she continued her career as an actress and singer. In 1953 she began her film career. In 1961 she appeared in Finn Saverys and Erik Knudsen's satirical musical Frihed - det bedste guld and took on roles in various theaters. From 1961 to 1966 she sang in the Danish Radio Jazz Group under the direction of Erik Moseholm .

With the song For dyn skyld she represented Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1965 and came in 7th. From 1968 to 1973 the film director Nils Johan Magnus Cleve Vest was her partner. She worked with the jazz pianist Torben Kjær until the 1980s. She has acted in more than 20 films and has appeared in several television series.
