Ellen Winther , also Ellen Winther Lembourn , born Ellen Sørensen (born August 11, 1933 in Århus , † August 13, 2011 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish opera singer (soprano) and actress .

Life

Ellen Winther was born as Ellen Sørensen , the daughter of the merchant Laurits Sørensen and his wife Esther.

Winther first studied music education at the Det Jyske Music Conservatory in Århus. In 1955 she graduated from there with a diploma. She then completed her training as an opera singer at the Det Kongelige Teater music school until 1957 . She made her stage debut as an opera singer with the role of Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro . From 1957 to 1987 she was a permanent member of the Det Kongelige Teater ensemble. She sang mainly the role of the soubrette and the coloratura soubrette , but also appeared there as an actress. Winther mainly took on roles in operettas : Adele in the operetta Die Fledermaus was one of her particularly brilliant roles. Occasionally she appeared again and again as an opera singer, such as Violetta in La traviata . She gave guest appearances as an opera singer at Den Jyske Opera in Århus, among others . In 1964 she made a guest appearance at the Kiel Opera House .

As an actress, she stood at Det Kongelige Teater including as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1957), in the season 1971/1972 as a maid Pernille in Ludvig Holberg's comedy The fickle ( the vægelsindede ) and 1986 as Clotilde Pontagnac in the comedy One must thefool his by Georges Feydeau on stage.

In 1975 she sang the role of Alice Couder in the operetta Die Dollarprinzessin at the Scala Theater in Copenhagen . She has also appeared in music revues and musicals , including in 1994 at the Amagerscenen Theater in Copenhagen as Mother Superior in the musical The Sound of Music . As a theater actress, she was often seen in the comedy Otello mustn't burst ( Skaf mig en tenor ) by Ken Ludwig , for example at the Private Teatret in Copenhagen in 1992.

Winther also worked in several operetta films and operetta adaptations for Danish television, such as Hannerl Tschöll in Das Dreimäderlhaus (1959), Adele in Die Fledermaus (1968), as Ciboletta in Eine Nacht in Venice (1969) and as Princess Helene in Ein Waltz Dream (1967).

In 1962 Ellen Winther took part in the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson for Denmark with the song Vuggevise ; she reached 10th place. It was her only appearance at the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson.

In 1983 she received the Dannebrogden for her artistic achievements . In 1996 she was awarded the Olaf Poulsen Actor Prize.

Private

Winther was married twice. From 1960 to 1966 she was married to the Danish pianist John Winther (* 1933). In her second marriage, she was married to the politician Hans Jørgen Lembourn from 1973 to 1997 until his death . Winther died at the age of 78.
