Birkin Cars is a South African manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

John Watson founded the company on July 5, 1982. Pinetown is the seat of the past and is currently Durban . Watson began manufacturing automobiles in 1983. The brand name is Birkin . By 1988, 200 vehicles had already been completed. 150 vehicles have been handed over for 2000, 200 for each of the following two years and 250 for 2003. There used to be the import company Birkin Europe Ltd. in Buntingford, England . Birkin Performance Cars from Durban under the direction of Ralph Smith and Dean Knoop claims to have taken over parts of the production.

Vehicles in the style of the Lotus Seven are on offer . A spaceframe chassis forms the basis. The body is made of aluminum , the fenders and the front are initially made of fiberglass , the fenders later optionally made of carbon fiber . Various Ford engines drive the vehicles. In the past, engines from Opel and Toyota as well as Wankel engines from Mazda were available.
