Boatswain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boatswain is a functional designation in shipping and a rank in the Navy .

Plural forms

The plural of "boatman" is, according to Duden either "boat people" or "boatmen". In civil parlance , a slight (but decreasing) preference for the form “boat people” can be seen. In the Bundeswehr, “boatmen” are usually used as well.

Maritime shipping

In historical shipping , the bosun was responsible for the maintenance and repair of the technical equipment of the ship, in particular the sails , ropes and anchors . He was subordinate to the master or the helmsman and commanded the deck crews in all seafaring tasks. On larger ships, the ranks were Chief Petty Officer and sub boatman .

In the merchant navy , the foreman of the deck crew is called a boatman. In Germany, boat people are sometimes master craftsmen with the designation ship operator . On the majority of German merchant ships with multinational crew, the position is filled as boatswain without a certificate.

Reichsmarine and Kriegsmarine

A deck officer of the Reich and Kriegsmarine in seafaring service held the rank of boatswain. Equivalent ranks in other areas of employment were helmsman, machinist, signal master, fireworker, etc.

The boatswain is one of the ranks of the Bundeswehr for naval uniform wearers , comparable to the sergeant . The legal basis is the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and uniforms of soldiers and the Soldiers Act .

Rank badge

The boatman's rank badges show an angle with the point upwards on both lower sleeves . The shoulder badges are designed similarly. The epaulettes are also edged with a closed braid .

Unofficial use as a collective name

Unofficially, the naval uniform bearers of the rank group NCOs with portepee are referred to as boatmen , occasionally also as boatmen. Due to the unofficial character of the designation, it usually remains unclear whether the ranks of the officer candidates from the rank group of non-commissioned officers with portepee ( ensign at sea and senior midshipman at sea ) following a different designation scheme also fall under this unofficial designation.

Others

The rank designation for air force and army uniform carriers of the same rank is Feldwebel . With regard to authority, appointment , pay , the subordinate and superordinate ranks, similarly also with regard to the positions, boatmen and sergeants are equal.
