history

The village of Brenitz was first mentioned on October 15, 1486 as Breßenitz . Today's local area, however, was settled much earlier, as evidenced by early historical discoveries near Brenitz. According to Reinhard E. Fischer , the place name is of Sorbian origin and means place where birch trees grow . The year 1477 is also mentioned here as the first mention. According to Arnošt Muka , the place name goes back to the personal name Brońa = Bronisław , which means something famous in battle . The village used to belong to the registrar of Sonnewalde .

The Slavic field names in the vicinity of Brenitz indicate an early settlement of Slavic peoples. In 1622 the village had 9 farmers , 2 gardeners , 7 smallholders and one housemate. In the Thirty Years' War Brenitz was heavily damaged. In 1818, 106 people lived in Brenitz with 24 fire places. The topographical-statistical overview of the administrative district of Frankfurt ad O. from 1844 recorded 130 inhabitants in 23 residential buildings in Brenitz for this year. The place was parish after Zeckerin. A windmill belonged to Brenitz . In 1867 Brenitz had 135 inhabitants. Until 1911 the place was called Brehnitz .

At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, after the defeat of the Kingdom of Saxony, it was decided to assign territories to the Kingdom of Prussia , which also affected the municipality of Brenitz. Since then, the community has belonged to the newly founded district of Luckau in the administrative district of Frankfurt in the Prussian province of Brandenburg . During the GDR district reform on July 25, 1952, the Luckau district was renamed Luckau district and greatly reduced in size. Brenitz then belonged to the Finsterwalde district in the Cottbus district . After the reunification , the municipality was initially in the Finsterwalde district . After the district reform in 1993 , Brenitz was assigned to the Elbe-Elster district and administered there by the Sonnewalde office. On May 1, 2002 Brenitz was incorporated into Sonnewalde . The Sonnewalde office was dissolved with effect from October 26, 2003.
