John Bulaitis
John Bulaitis , also Jonas Vytautas Bulaitis , (born June 26, 1933 in London , † December 26, 2010 in Rome ) was a Vatican diplomat .
Life
Bulaitis was of Lithuanian origin. He studied from 1944 to 1952 at St. Ignatius College, a Jesuit college in Stanford Hill / London, and from 1952 to 1958 philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He received on February 2 in 1958 for the in Lithuania located Diocese of Kaišiadorys the priesthood . From 1959 to 1962 he completed a doctorate at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and then entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . After further studies at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy he had his first assignment abroad at the Apostolic Nunciature in South Korea in 1963/64 . On July 1, 1964, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the honorary title of Surplus Secret Chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ). Tasks followed in Chile and Panama . From 1972 to 1987 Bulaitis worked almost continuously in Africa and dealt with African affairs in Rome.
On November 21, 1981 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Narona and ordered him to the apostolic delegate in Chad as well as Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in the Central African Republic and in the Republic of Congo . He was ordained bishop by Pope John Paul II on January 6, 1982 in St. Peter's Basilica itself; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Eduardo Martínez Somalo and Lucas Moreira Neves OP .
As pro-nuncio, Bulaitis headed the papal missions in Iran (1987-1991), South Korea (1991-1997) and Mongolia (1992-1997). On March 25, 1997 he became apostolic nuncio in Albania .
Bulaitis lived in Rome from 2008. On July 26, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
Bulaitis died on December 26, 2010 and was buried on December 27 in the Campo di Verano cemetery. The celebrations in Santo Stefano degli Abissini were chaired by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone together with Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re and Cardinal Giovanni Coppa .
