The Calwer Klostersommer in Hirsau is an annual open-air cultural festival in the northern Black Forest. It takes place between the end of July and the beginning of August in the cloister of the ruined monastery of St. Peter and Paul in the Hirsau district of Calw (northern Black Forest) and reached up to 15,000 visitors. In 2008 the event replaced the Hirsau Klosterspiele, which had been taking place at the same location since 1959 .

Emergence

The Calw Monastery Summer in Hirsau has existed since 2008, it replaced the Hirsau Monastery Games . It was a theater festival organized by the city of Calw from 1959 to 2007 at the same location. Declining visitor numbers finally led to the cessation of the monastery games. The organizer is the Calw concert agency concetera GmbH. The event title "Calwer Klostersommer in Hirsau" is protected as a trademark throughout Europe. Since then, the city of Calw has supported the annual Calw monastery summer from budget funds in the course of cultural funding, but has no influence on the program design.

Effect on the city of Calw

In 2011, the Calw monastery summer in Hirsau was the subject of a scientific investigation as part of a bachelor thesis. The author was able to prove that the Calw Monastery Summer (CKS) promotes the image of the city of Calw and stimulates tourism.

program

The program consists of ten to twelve evening events that take place almost daily during the event period. The offer is broad and ranges from classical music to folk music, hits, pop and comedy. The Hermann Hesse Festival of the Udo Lindenberg Foundation was announced for 2016 as part of the monastery summer.

capacity

The capacity of the Calw monastery summer is 1465 seats and can be expanded to up to 2000 people (partially seated with standing room). Depending on the event, visitors come from Baden-Württemberg, from all federal states and even from neighboring countries.
