Cannonball Fever - It's only really starting on the highway (original title: Speed Zone! ) Is an American action comedy by Jim Drake from 1989. It is only the German title after a sequel to the action comedies On the highway, hell is going on  ( 1981) and All hell's loose on the highway  (1984).

action

Several people gather at a country inn in preparation for the infamous Cannonball Run, an illegal three-day cross country race from Washington, DC to Santa Monica , where the winner and five runner-ups will receive $ 1 million. The hot-headed Washington Police Commissioner Spiro T. Edsel, however, along with his long-suffering assistant Whitman, arrested all drivers to prevent the race. Therefore sponsors have to find replacement drivers by the next day.

Leo Ross, seeing his old school rival Charlie Cronan have driving skills while he works as a valet, bullies him into driving his BMW . Ross also persuades Charlie to bring Tiffany, an underexposed Marilyn Monroe-esque actress.

Vic DeRubis is a hit man supposed to kill Alec Stewart, an English failure and compulsive gambler who wasted money borrowed from loan sharks. Alec persuades Vic to ride with him in hopes of winning the Cannonball Run and paying off the various gangsters. They work together in a Jaguar XJS .

Lea Roberts and Margaret take over a Ferrari Daytona Spyder after the driver they are trying to win is arrested. As MIT graduates interested in electronics and gadgets, they are tempted by the prize money and the challenge.

When the Lamborghini driver is arrested, Valentino Rosatti, a capricious Italian porter, has to let Flash, a former police officer, drive him, who wants the money for his own reasons.

Nelson and Randolph Van Sloan, two millionaires and the only drivers not arrested in the police operation, take part in a Rolls-Royce . They spend most of their time sneaking a flight to Los Angeles to win by cheating.

The race is followed by a pair of television reporters, Heather Scott and Jack O'Neill, who are so caught up in the action that they decide to drive their OB van.

In pursuit is Edsel, who is growing insane in his unsuccessful attempt to stop the racers. Edsel and his men manage to arrest Vic and Alec, who quickly escape and steal the police car . Edsel and Whitman chase them in their Jaguar. At the end of the race, Edsel and Whitman themselves win the Cannonball Run by driving the Jaguar over the finish line first at Santa Monica Pier - this saves Alec because, as he explains to Vic, the winner is the car, not the driver - followed by Vic and Alec in their stolen police car. Charlie and Tiffany, who drive the BMW, are third, Lee and Margaret fourth, Heather and Jack fifth, Flash and Valentino sixth. The Van Sloan brothers are the last to get on roller skis, shoot over the finish line and plunge into the Pacific.

criticism

The American film critic Roger Ebert listed in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 21, 1989 what he found not funny about the film. He summarized that nothing was funny or had ever been funny. The talent of John Candy is wasted in the film. The lexicon of international films found the film to be "a cheap plot with a poor and stupid plot". On video.de it is said that you would look in vain for a “coherent story” with this “car crash slapstick”. The mix of “lively music, gags, a lot of sheet metal damage and celebrities in supporting roles” is “as banal as it is entertaining”.

Awards

Brooke Shields received the Golden Raspberry in 1990 for her role . Jim Drake as director and Murray Shostak as producer have been nominated.

background

The film was shot in Los Angeles , Santa Monica and Lachute, Québec . It grossed approximately $ 3.1 million in US cinemas . From the pre-productions Hell's Going On The Highway and Hell's On The Highway again is the only Jamie Farr to be seen again as Sheikh Abdul ben Falafel. The Olympic champion Carl Lewis has a supporting role as a jogger.
