action

Every two years, a notorious illegal car race in the United States coast to coast , from Connecticut to California instead - the so-called Cannonball Run . Various illustrious drivers are trying to win the coveted trophy this time, among them the adventurer J. J. McClure with his crazy assistant Victor, who are on the way with an ambulance and the doctor Nikolas van Helsing so as not to be stopped by the police. Occasionally, Victor transforms into the hero Captain Chaos . Continue driving with the ex-racing driver and alcoholic Jamie Blake, who appears disguised as a priest with his passenger Fenderbaum. Or Seymour Goldfarb, who competes in James Bond style with his Aston Martin , as well as two crazy Japanese with their high-tech Subaru.

The teams fight for victory with various tricks, but after 3000 miles Marcie and Jill win with their Lamborghini because Victor prefers to save a poodle from drowning instead of sticking the card in the clock, which would have meant victory. McClure forgives his buddy because he just can't be mad at him. The drivers celebrate the end with a party. The following teams are shown in the plot:

Reviews

“Star-studded action film about a crazy race, which is told in a series of loosely connected episodes and offers the opportunity for some qualitatively different self-parodies and film quotations. Undemanding, joke-filled entertainment. "

“(...) slapstick, stars and smoking tires, frenzy as a cult. (Rating: 2 stars / average) "

- Adolf Heinzlmeier and Berndt Schulz : Lexicon "Films on TV", 1990

“Loud car fun from Hal Needham, who was able to win a number of veritable stars for his potpourrie of car chases, stunts, lewd jokes and movie quotes: Led by Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Fonda are among the honors. However, Roger Moore is unsurpassable in a self-parody as a playboy who thinks he is Roger Moore, while Jackie Chan in a supporting role as a Japanese man with the edge of his hand is not yet completely convincing. Remarks

  • The film was a huge commercial success. It grossed 205,633,900 US dollars (adjusted for inflation) worldwide and was ranked sixth among the most successful films of 1981.
  • Showing the outtakes in the credits was a quirk of director Hal Needham. Jackie Chan liked this idea so much that he adopted it for his own films.
  • In order to combat his fatigue, Jackie Chan watches the classic pornography Behind the Green Door while driving .
  • The plot is very similar to that of the two 1976 films Cannonball and The Craziest Rally in the World
  • There are various allusions to other film roles of the actor or the actual person. Roger Moore parodies his James Bond role, Peter Fonda his roles from Die wilden Engel and Easy Rider and Dean Martin his addiction to drinking.
