The Carnival Sunrise is a Post-Panamax - cruise ship of the US shipping company Carnival Cruise Line . She is based on the Carnival Destiny and is the lead ship of the Triumph class .

history

Construction and commissioning

The ship was built as Carnival Triumph at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri in Monfalcone . The keel was laid in 1998 and in July 1999 the ship was delivered to Carnival Cruise Line. After being christened by Madeleine Arison, it left for its first cruise on July 27, 1999.

modification

From March 2019 to April 2019, the ship was rebuilt for 200 million dollars at Navantia in Cadiz. In March 2019 it was renamed Carnival Sunrise . During the renovation, the ship was damaged by fire. The ship was christened in New York on May 23, 2019.

Incidents

Incident 2012

The ship had been confiscated by US authorities on March 30, 2012 at short notice in the port of Galveston as a pledge for claims for damages against the company. The claim was based on the Costa Concordia average of the Costa Crociere , as was Carnival Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation . The Carnival Triumph was allowed after the parties had agreed to leave shortly after the port again.

Incident 2013

During a four-day cruise in the Gulf of Mexico on February 10, 2013, a fire broke out in the rear of the two engine rooms of the Carnival Triumph . At that time, the ship was with 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members on board about 240 kilometers from Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula . Although the fire could be extinguished by the on-board systems, the main power supply and drives failed. The most important on-board systems could continue to be operated via the emergency power supply.

In addition to the tugs Resolve Pioneer and Dabhol , the Carnival Elation and Carnival Legend also reached the damaged ship in the afternoon and provided support. After the sanitary facilities and the power supply could partly be put back into operation, the first plans included towing the ship to Progreso de Castro for repairs .

Since the Carnival Triumph had drifted around 160 kilometers further north by strong currents, it was decided to bring the ship to the port of Mobile (Alabama) with the help of another tug . After the tow ropes were broken several times by currents and strong winds, the tug only reached the port of Mobile on the evening of February 14th. On the morning of February 15, passengers were able to disembark the Carnival Triumph . In order to assess and repair the damage, the ship was later moved to the BAE Southeast Shipyards. The shipping company canceled all voyages of the ship until mid-April 2013. The cause of the fire was due to a break in a fuel line in the area of machine set 6. Leaking heavy oil ignited on hot assemblies.

During the repair work at the shipyard, the Carnival Triumph detached itself from the pier, drifted for several hours in the harbor and damaged other ships until it was caught again by a tug. The repair work was then no longer continued in the shipyard, but at the Alabama Cruise Terminal.

Incident 2016

In February 2016 there was a fire in the engine room, which was extinguished by the automatic extinguishing system. The ship was on a cruise off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. During the subsequent repair and maintenance work at the BAE Systems Ship Repair yard in Mobile, the mooring lines broke in strong winds and the ship drifted against a cargo ship. The Carnival Triumph was damaged.

Furnishing

The ship has eight penthouses, 40 suites and 428 cabins with balconies. There are also 326 outside cabins without a balcony, 519 inside cabins and 540 cabins for the crew.

commitment

The ship is used from different base ports on the Gulf of Mexico and the American Atlantic coast on routes in the western and eastern Caribbean.
