action
Jamie, a young girl, desperately tries to reach out to her grandmother in Omaha , Nebraska . When she fails, she goes to Omaha. There she goes to her grandmother's apartment, which is next to a cornfield. But apart from two mysterious children loitering in front of the complex, she meets no one there. In the apartment she finds an eviction notice .
She then seeks out Detective Armbrister and the house owner Jerry, who both cannot help her. Instead, she meets the children again and a priest, who just stares at her. She receives threats and repeatedly meets mysterious children. Eventually she befriends the stripper Tiffany. Jerry invites her to a BBQ on the roof of the house, but before she even enters the scene, Jerry is killed by the children.
The next day, she returns to Detective Armbrister and puts him under pressure until he tells her that Jamie's grandmother was part of a religious cult as a child. At that time she was the only survivor of a major fire that the then priest Abel had started as part of a mass suicide.
As the dead pile up in town, Jamie finally finds out about the cult. She is captured and the priest tells her about the master of the sect, the "one who walks behind the ranks". It's Abel, who through black magic always remained a child. She also meets a child who pretends to be her grandmother and speaks in an older voice. The children try to convince Jamie to join their cult. Jamie apparently agrees and sets off a gas explosion that sets the apartment on fire. However, Abel is not afraid and can tie up Jamie with corn plants. At the last second, Detective Armbrister manages to free Jamie and the two of them escape just before the apartment explodes.
criticism
“Of course, none of these films are handsome, but this one breaks with the most important rule of horror flicks: if someone is thrown off the roof, make sure that something is impaled when they land. [...] "
“The film tries to combine the terror of its immediate predecessor with a bit of comic relief - a neighbors who are permanently stoned and smoking the door, children at the splatter slot machine (the best scene!). Unfortunately that doesn't really ignite - despite Michael Ironside as a scarred priest and considerable pyrotechnic effort in the final. "
