The China Open 2016 was a pool tournament in the 9-ball discipline that took place in Shanghai from August 21 to 28, 2016 .

The Chinese Wu Jiaqing won the tournament with a 11: 4 victory in the final against the Taiwanese Cheng Yu-hsuan . Third place went to Ko Pin-yi and Wu Kun-lin . The defending champion was the reigning 9-ball world champion Albin Ouschan , who was eliminated in the round of 32 against Ko Pin-yi.

In the women’s final , Yu Han beat Liu Shasha 9: 8 after she was 5-8 behind. After 2014 it was her second win at the China Open. The Chinese Wang Xiaotong and Xue Chen also reached the semi-finals . Defending champion Kim Ga-young was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Wang Xiaotong.

From August 21 to 23, 2016, a qualifying tournament was held at the Shanghai Hot ice Billiard Club (men) and the Zongdu Billiard Club (women). 64 players who initially competed against each other in the double knockout system qualified for the men's tournament . From the round of 32, the tournament continued in the knockout system . The goal was nine games in the qualification and the double knockout phase and eleven games in the final round. In the women's category, 48 players qualified for the main tournament and 16 players for the final round. The goal for the women was seven games in the qualification and the double knockout phase and nine games in the knockout phase. In both competitions, the qualification was played with a winner break and the main tournament with an alternating break. The main tournaments were held at the Pudong Tangzhen Culture & Sports Center and the Pudong Tangzhen Qi ai ren jia .
