Life
After attending a European school in Belgium, he studied philosophy, German literature and musicology at the University of Vienna from 2000 to 2003 and temporarily worked as a dance theater dramaturge at the Darmstadt State Theater . In 2001 he received the Rimbaud Prize of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation for his first volume of poetry, Schluck auf Stein . The early texts show a strong influence by the Viennese group .
In 2003 Filips moved to the Free University of Berlin , where he completed his studies in 2008 with a thesis on Hölderlin's latest poems. From 2003 to 2010 he worked primarily as a music dramaturge and translator, with his Pasolini translations, Dunckler Enthusiasmo and his work as program manager for the Sing-Akademie receiving greater attention. In 2020 his monograph Der Immortlichkeitsclown on the Viennese poet composer Adalbert von Goldschmidt (1848–1906) was published.
Since 2010 he has also been working increasingly as a director for the theater and has presented some cinematic works. Larger works that mix drama, opera, melodrama and action art were among others. a. at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele (Tristram Shandy, 2013) and at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater (Kleist, 2011). In 2015 he staged Die Bismarck as “Moratorium for the Iron Chancellor in You” at the Volksbühne in Berlin (with Sophie Rois and Daniel Zillmann , among others ), and in 2018 at the same house the staged world premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Funkoratorium Des Menschen Unterhaltsprozess gegen Gott (with Margarita Breitkreiz , Mex panties, etc.) and in October 2019 the revue of a missed opportunity with Milan Peschel and Marion Brasch . Filips has lived in Berlin as a freelance writer since 2002. His texts and translations are mainly published by the Swiss publisher Urs Engeler Editor . His work is characterized by a “flexible lyrical mixed language” (NZZ) that incorporates “socio-dialects, journalists' and specialist languages”, but also a history-conscious tone and humanities discourses.
Together with Urs Engeler, Filips has been publishing the roughbooks since 2010 , a series for contemporary poetry. He works closely with Kai-Uwe Jirka (conductor, choir director) and Monika Rinck (author). Filips also translates, mainly from English, Italian and Dutch ( JH Prynne , Paul Bogaert , Els Moors ).
In January 2017 he founded the multilingual literary collective WIESE / مرج (How it is) in the “New Neighborhood Moabit”, and in 2019 he was one of the voluntary co-founders of the “Moabit Mountain College”.
