The State Kavala airport "Alexander the Great" ( Greek Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Καβάλας "Μέγας Αλέξανδρος" Kratikos Aerolimenas Kavala "Megas Alexandros" ) is the international airport of the Macedonian commercial and port city of Kavala in northern Greece in the Administrative Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace . It is also used as the military airfield of the Greek Air Force and is known as Chrysoupoli Air Base .

The old airport in Amygdaleonas (Αμυγδαλεώνας) was operated from 1952 to 1981.

Location and transport links

The airport is about 8 km from exit 32A Perni (coming from Kavala) and exit 33 Chrysoupoli (coming from Xanthi) of Highway 2 and 30 km southeast of Kavala . There has been a public bus connection to Kavala since 2017; Currently (as of 2019) the bus company KTEL Kavala only runs 2 trips per day. Alternatives are taxi (around 20 euros to the seaside resort of Keramoti) and rental cars.

Domestic flights to Athens and some islands; Charter flights to European destinations, including in the German-speaking regions Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Vienna.
