Clueless - what else! (Original title: Clueless ) is a teenage comedy from 1995 by director Amy Heckerling , who also wrote the screenplay. Alicia Silverstone played the main role . The film is a modernized take on Jane Austen's novel Emma .
action
The main character Cher lives with her father Mel, a lawyer. Her mother died during plastic surgery . The film shows how Cher and her friends / classmates live. You use your own expressions such as B. "tricked" (great) or "a real Betty" (pretty woman). Cher and her best friend Dionne take care of the awkward new student, Tai. The two want to “totally renew” it - they pimp it up visually and want to better integrate Tai into the new school and surroundings. The clique goes to parties and apparently has a lot of fun.
Tai quickly fits into the clique. Cher and Dionne try to pair their new friend with the handsome and popular Elton. Meanwhile, Cher is a little jealous of Dionne's relationship with Murray. While looking for a partner, she falls in love with her new classmate Christian. When she invites him to her home and spends a lot of time with him, the two get along well at first. However, when Cher makes advances to him, he rushes out of the house. Murray finally tells her that Christian is gay . He and Cher remain good friends.
Cher paired up her teachers, Mr. Hall and Ms. Geist. The other students are thrilled because they are in a good mood from now on, giving better grades and less homework. Cher negotiates her grades with the teachers instead of honestly earning them with diligence - which makes her father as a lawyer proud of her talent for argument.
Meanwhile, Josh, Cher's ex-stepbrother (his mother was briefly married to Mel), comes to Beverly Hills. He also wants to become a lawyer and helps Mel on some cases. There are always quick-witted dialogues and taunts between Josh and Cher. She accuses him of being boring, but he thinks she is selfish and immature.
The pairing between Tai and Elton fails because he is in love with Cher. When she rejects him, Elton leaves Cher in a parking lot in the middle of Sun Valley, where she is ambushed. Out of necessity, she calls Josh, who then takes her home.
Eventually Cher's driving test is approaching - it fails because it damages several cars and makes the driving instructor blush with anger. When she returns home, she meets Tai and Josh together. Tai asks Cher for help because she wants to impress Josh.
Cher notices that thanks to her "renewal", Tai has become a heartless, manipulative egoist . When she confronts them, an argument breaks out. Cher ends up wandering the streets pensively, wondering why she's so angry about a possible relationship between Tai and Josh. Finally it dawns on her - she is in love with Josh. Inspired by this realization, she is reconciled with Tai.
Cher doesn't know what to do with Josh. When she tries to help her father with a case, she unwittingly messes things up, and one of Mel's partners criticizes her harshly. Josh defends his stepsister, and the other lawyer leaves them alone with their work. As Josh comforts Cher, the two of them kiss.
In the final scene, Cher and Dionne's paired teachers get married, Tai gets together with the skater Travis, Dionne and Murray are still happy, and Cher and Josh are a couple.
Comparison with Emma
Most of the plot was taken from Jane Austen's novel Emma , and the characters can also be compared with one another:
- Cher - Emma Woodhouse
- Josh - Mr. Knightley
- Tai - Harriet Smith
- Elton - Mr. Elton
- Christian - Frank Churchill
- Mr. Hall - Mr. Weston
- Ms. Geist - Mrs. Weston
- Travis - Mr. Martin
Dionne and Murray were introduced as a kind of buffo part to Cher and Josh. Your characters do not appear in Jane Austen's novel. They represent a couple who, despite squabbles and some discrepancies, love each other very much. At the beginning of the film, Cher shows, just like Emma Woodhouse, aversions to such partnerships or marriages. As the film / novel progresses, her dislike disappears and Dionne and Murray become Cher's role models.
The difference between Christian and Frank Churchill is that Christian is gay and Frank Churchill is already engaged. At first, however, both of them seem like they and Cher / Emma are becoming a couple. Emma begins the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Weston. In Clueless , this scene (Mr. Hall and Ms. Geist's wedding) ends the film.
