Coon Rapids was founded in Anoka Township . The location on the Mississippi River was decisive for the development of the strongly agricultural area. In 1952 the township was converted into an independent village and renamed Coon Rapids. The urban area includes the former township with the exception of the independent city of Anoka . In 1959 Coon Rapids received city rights. Since 1959, the city has grown from a population of 14,000 to over 61,000 in 2000. This makes Coon Rapids the fifth largest suburb of the Twin Cities.
