The Campeonato Sudamericano of 1942 was the 17th game of the South American continental football championship and took place from January 10 to February 7 for the fourth time in Uruguay. Although two teams were missing with Bolivia and Colombia , the number of participants of seven teams, 21 games, 81 goals and 674,000 spectators each set new records for the competition.

The tournament was played as before in the league system (everyone against everyone). If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned. All games were played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.

Uruguay became South American soccer champions for the eighth time.
