action

The somewhat sedate and boring family man Cal Weaver is surprised at a romantic meal in a restaurant by his wife Emily with the news that she has a lover and will be leaving him. He spends the following evenings in a bar, where he gets drunk and reveals the pain of separation. The younger ripper Jacob takes care of him, gives him flirt tips, clothes him completely new and visits a gym with him. Cal now wears different clothes and is visibly slimmer, which ultimately makes him look more attractive. He is increasingly developing into a womanizer , which is not hidden from his family and friends. But all the affairs that Cal has with Kate, among others, who turns out to be his son's teacher in the further course of the plot, let him not forget his love for Emily.

Robbie, the eldest son of the Weavers, is madly in love with the four-year-old nanny Jessica. Although she does not reciprocate this love, he harasses her all the time with letters, messages and confessions of love. Jessica, on the other hand, is secretly in love with Robbie's father Cal and takes nude photos for him, but does not give them to him.

Cal looks for an apartment of his own, his wife Emily, who is now separated from him, carefully hooks up with her work colleague David Lindhagen, with whom she already had a one-night stand, which led to the separation of the marriage. Meanwhile, Jacob meets the newly minted lawyer Hannah, who has just separated from her boyfriend after receiving only one job offer in his law firm instead of the expected marriage proposal. Jacob falls in love with her, and Hannah dissuades him from being a philanderer. When she takes him home to introduce him to her parents, Jacob realizes that Hannah is Cal's daughter. He is anything but enthusiastic about his daughter's new relationship, as he got to know Jacob as a breakout. Cal is of the opinion that Jacob is both too dangerous and not good enough for his beloved daughter.

At this unfortunate encounter between Emily and Cal and Hannah and Jacob, the nanny Jessica and her father Bernie also appear. The latter discovered the envelope with the nude photos on which Jessica had written the name Cal. He mistakenly believes that Cal is having a sexual relationship with her and confronts him angrily. In addition, David Lindhagen appears at the Weavers' garden, he would like to bring Emily her sweater - which was forgotten in his car. There is a solid fight between Bernie, Cal, Jacob and Lindhagen, in which the police finally have to arbitrate.

A little later, the Weavers, Jacob and Jessica take part in Robbie's graduation party. He has been selected to give the keynote address. He starts out pessimistic and explains that he no longer believes in true love and kinship. His father Cal interrupts him, who continues the speech and talks about the fact that love is more than a romantic feeling, that lovers have to pass many tests and work on themselves in everyday life. His wife Emily, from whom he is still officially separated, looks at him moved. At the end Robbie takes the floor again and now makes a new declaration of love to Jessica from the lectern. The audience applauds.

Cal and Emily then approach each other with a smile; however, it remains to be seen whether they will find their way back together. But Cal can now accept the relationship between his daughter Hannah and Jacob. Finally, Jessica Robbie hands over the envelope with her nude photos with a friendly gesture and adds, with a wink, that the pictures are "supposed to get him through high school".

German synchronization

In a bar, Hannah confesses to her friend that she “really loves” the American late night host Conan O'Brien and that if the opportunity arose, she would “have babies with him” too. This dialogue was changed in the German dubbing so that O'Brien was replaced by Bill Clinton .

criticism

"The comedy, with multi-layered characters and clever dialogues, traces the longing and happiness, disappointments and pains of love beyond common clichés and convincingly brings wit, romance and wisdom into harmony."

"With 'Crazy, Stupid, Love', the two directors Ficarra and Requa succeed in a ruthless love and thief story, crazy and stupid - so it has to be love."

- Fritz Göttler : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“'Crazy, Stupid, Love' is the kind of comedy that comes up about once a year and blends seamlessly with such great comedies as' Little Miss Sunshine '(2006),' Juno '(2007),' Nick & Norah: Soundtrack of a Night '(2008),' (500) Days of Summer '(2009),' The Kids Are All Right '(2010) and' Easy A '. Even if the films have little in common on the surface, they have a lot in common: unconventional ideas, wonderful actors, great scripts and that certain something. "

- Adam Arndt : serial junkies

“Nevertheless: With all quirks, 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' is itself a 'game changer'. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that this is a real adult film. While Hollywood comedies in recent years have mainly revolved around thirtysomethings that shirked responsibility, all the main characters here are busy making decisions and bearing the consequences. [...] So 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' ultimately opens up a new genre beyond 'Bromance' and 'Women's film': namely that of the unisex romantic comedy. Many films may soon follow this example - but with a better script and a somewhat fresher core message. "

- Hannah Pilarczyk : Spiegel Online

“The amazing thing is that despite this array of big female names and despite the care that is put into each of their roles, none of the female characters are in the center. 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' is the longest story about the relationship between Steve Carell's horned father and Ryan Gosling's bar stool Casanova. For a romantic comedy, actually a women's genre, that's quite unusual, but all the more interesting. "
