Darryl Jerard "DJ" Augustin Jr. (born November 10, 1987 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American professional basketball player and plays in the NBA . He has been a point guard for the Orlando Magic since the 2016/17 season .

Childhood and high school

DJ Augustin was born in New Orleans and lived there until 2005, when Hurricane Katrina forced the family to move. The choice fell on Missouri City in Texas . First he attended Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, which he led to two state championships. In Texas, he attended Hightower High School in Missouri City , where he also played basketball in his senior year . He received his diploma from Brother Martin High School.

At Hightower High School, Augustin was particularly enthusiastic about his very precise passing game and precise throwing. In his first game for that high school , Augustin scored almost a triple-double against Madison High School with 29 points, 8 rebounds and 14 assists . With him, the school achieved a season record of 26: 4 wins and was only eliminated in the third playoff round . Augustin won several awards for his good performance. So he became MVP of District 20-5A, reached the All-Houston First Team and the All-State First Team. He also became a McDonald's All-American and played as a starter for the West against future teammate Kevin Durant .

Freshman

Augustin attended the University of Texas from 2006 to 2008 and played there for the university team, the Texas Longhorns . In his freshman season he started all 35 games as point guard for the Longhorns and averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 assists per game. For his achievements he was elected to the Big-All 12 Second Team and the Big-All 12 Rookie Team. Augustin could have signed up for the NBA draft in 2007 . However, he decided to spend another year with the Texas Longhorns to improve his game.

Sophomore

In the last semester of 2007, Augustin achieved a GPA of 3.64 - the maximum is 4.0. As a result, he was elected to the Academic America First Team, which honors the best students who are also on a college sports team. He is the second Texas Longhorns player to receive this award after Jim Krivacs . Augustin was also elected to the USBWA All-America First Team. On April 3, 2008, Augustin received the Bob Cousy Award , which honors the best point guard of all colleges. On April 23, 2008 Augustin finally signed up for the NBA draft .

NBA

Augustin was voted ninth in the first round of the 2008 NBA draft . He signed with the Charlotte Bobcats for $ 3.8 million for three years. In his debut season, Augustin achieved an average of 11.8 points and 3.5 assists.

Despite declining performances in his second season (6.3 points), he was raised after the move from Raymond Felton to the New York Knicks in the offseason 2010 to the starter on the position of point guard. He played a convincing season, scoring 14.4 points and 6.1 assists, but missed the playoffs with the Bobcats.

After the weak 2011/2012 season with only 7 wins, the Bobcats did not submit a new offer to Augustin for a contract and Augustin then switched to the Indiana Pacers . There he received a contract for a year until 2013.

Augustine with the Bobcats

For the 2013/2014 season Augustin did not receive a new contract with the Pacers and then moved within the league to the Toronto Raptors . There he should come from the bank as a back-up from Kyle Lowry . In November 2013, the Raptors fired Augustin to make room for new players in the squad. In the 2013/2014 season he played for the Chicago Bulls. He was supposed to act as a back-up for star player Derrick Rose . After Rose sustained a serious injury, Augustin replaced him for the remainder of the season. Augustin replaced Rose well, scoring 14.9 points and 5.0 assists per game in 61 games.

After a year with the Bulls, Augustin signed a new deal with the Detroit Pistons . In January 2015, the starting point guard Brandon Jennings injured himself , so Augustin took over his role.

In February he was transferred to the Oklahoma City Thunder along with Kyle Singler and a draft pick. In February 2016 he was handed over to the Denver Nuggets along with Steve Novak and two draft picks . In the summer of 2016, Augustin signed a $ 29 million four-year contract with the Orlando Magic .
