action

Dan is a widower and single father who makes a living from home writing a column . When the annual visit to his parents is due, he drives to Rhode Island with his three daughters Jane, Cara and Lilly . Even getting there is difficult, as 17-year-old Jane annoys her father all the time that she wants to drive because she has a driver's license. Cara is also not particularly enthusiastic when her father picks her up from a café and separates her from her boyfriend. Dan drives her with her other two sisters to her grandparents' home, where they arrive at dusk. The morning of the next day, Dan's mother suggests that he get a newspaper, which he is not happy about. However, she urges her son so that he reluctantly drives.

After Dan finds a bookstore, he first looks around for books. He notices a woman who is waiting at the sales counter for the seller to call. She sees Dan, thinks he is an employee and asks him about books. She doesn't even know what kind of book she is looking for. While she is telling what she would like, Dan reaches for some books that he can get hold of. In the end, she learns that Dan does not work in the bookstore and also that he only grabbed books at random. She is so fascinated by it that she takes him over for a coffee and talks to him.

When she says that she finally has to go, Dan takes heart and asks her for her phone number. Shortly afterwards, Dan also makes his way to his parents' house. He tells Mitch, his younger brother, about the woman from the bookstore. Shortly afterwards, Mitch asks his girlfriend to listen to the story and in front of Dan stands the woman from the bookstore - Marie. She and Dan agree not to tell anyone about their meeting at the bookstore. The next morning morning exercise is on the daily schedule. Mitch, a gymnastics instructor, starts the program, but soon lets Marie, who is behind Dan, continue. This is visibly disrupted by their movements.

Dan's mother persuades him that he needs another date after four years and invites Dan's old schoolmate. Mitch offers to support Dan by accompanying him to the meeting with Marie. It turns out that Dan's old schoolmate has gone from being an ugly duckling to a well-paid doctor. The next morning, Marie confronts Dan why he is flirting with his old schoolmate when he obviously has feelings for her, Marie.

In the evening everyone in the family has to give a show for the best, only Dan is excluded. However, Mitch asks him to accompany him singing on the guitar. Dan agrees and plays the guitar for the first time since the death of his wife four years ago. As Mitch the song has finished, Dan adds a verse for the song Let My Love Open The Door by Pete Townshend added.

The next morning Marie breaks up with Mitch and two hours later Dan meets her at a bowling alley. When they start kissing, Dan's family bursts in. Mitch hits his brother and leaves. When Dan tries to drive after Marie, he rams a police patrol when pulling out of a parking space, which had already stopped him at a stop sign for not stopping. His driver's license will then be withdrawn.

The next day, Dan finds Marie in a gym in New York City. In the credits, you learn that Dan and Marie are getting married on Dan’s parents’s property and that Mitch is with Dan’s old schoolmate.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on October 22, 2007 that while the film was not a perfect comedy, it was amusing, cleverly constructed, and well executed. The third part is a disappointment and doesn't seem convincing.

Kevin Lally wrote in the film Journal International that Steve Carell had suffered a major setback with the financially unsuccessful comedy Evan Almighty , but that he could win back the audience's favor with this film. The film is a "quiet but real pleasure". The chemistry between Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche is missing, but this would be balanced with their intelligence. The representations of Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney are "solid"; the play of Alison Pill, Brittany Robertson and Marlene Lawston is "peppy".

The lexicon of international films wrote: “The cryptic comedy pointedly questions the ideal of an intact family. Although the plot is watered down by the tendency towards harmony, the film still wins people over with sensitive character studies and the convincing main actor. "

The German Film and Media Assessment in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “valuable”.
