David William Martin Shaw (born May 25, 1964 in St. Thomas , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender played a total of over 800 games for six teams in the National Hockey League between 1983 and 1998 . Most of this time he spent with the Nordiques de Québec , who had selected him in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft in 13th position, and with the New York Rangers .

Career

youth

David Shaw was born in St. Thomas, but grew up in Exeter, 70 kilometers away and played in his youth for the Stratford Cullitons , among others , before moving to the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the 1981/82 season, the highest ranking junior league in its home province. With the Rangers, who were already occupied with two future Hall of Fame members in the person of Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens , he won both the OHL championship in the form of the J. Ross Robertson Cup as a rookie subsequent Memorial Cup . As a result, the defender was selected in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft in 13th position by the Nordiques de Québec , but returned to Kitchener for the time being. There he increased his personal statistics significantly to 74 scorer points from 57 games, while he made his debut for the Nordiques in the National Hockey League (NHL) in January 1983 . After all, the Canadian played his last junior season in 1983/84, in which he again reached the final of the OHL playoffs and (as the host team) the Memorial Cup final with the Rangers, but lost to the Ottawa 67’s there . Furthermore, he was elected to both the OHL First All-Star Team and the All-Star Team of the Memorial Cup after he had scored ten points in four games in the last one and was the best preparer of the tournament with seven assists (together with Adam Creighton ) .

NHL

At the beginning of the 1984/85 season, Shaw moved permanently to the organization of the Nordiques de Québec and established himself after a year, which he had mainly spent with their farm team , the Fredericton Express , in the American Hockey League , also in their NHL squad. He completed two full seasons in Québec before the Nordiques and John Ogrodnick handed him over to the New York Rangers in September 1987 , for which Jeff Jackson and Terry Carkner received. At the Rangers, the defender took over the post of assistant captain , while in his first year in New York he achieved his personal career best with 32 points from 68 games. As a result, he spent a little over four years with the Broadway Blueshirts , where he had missed much of the 1989/90 season due to a shoulder injury. Finally, the Rangers transferred him to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Jeff Beukeboom in November 1991 , completing the move from Mark Messier to New York the month before.

However, the Oilers had no use for Shaw, so he was sent to the Minnesota North Stars in January 1992 after twelve completed games in exchange for Brian Glynn . In Minnesota, he ended only the 1991/92 season before he was given in September 1992 without further consideration to the Boston Bruins . After three changes in less than a year, Boston was again a long-term career station for the Canadian, so he completed over 170 games for the Bruins in the following three seasons and reached the second round with them in the 1994 playoffs for the first and only time of his career the post-season .

In August 1995 Shaw was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a third-round vote in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft , who should represent his last NHL team. After almost two and a half years in Florida, he was handed over to the San Jose Sharks together with Bryan Marchment in March 1998 , while Andrei Nasarow moved to Tampa and the teams also exchanged first-round voting rights for the 1998 NHL Entry Draft . For the Sharks, however, the Canadian was no longer used, but ended his career in the International Hockey League with the Las Vegas Thunder and from January 2001, after almost one and a half years without a competitive game, with the Chicago Wolves . In total, the defender has played 814 NHL games and recorded 206 points scorer.
