action
Frank Beardsley is a widowed Rear Admiral in the US Coast Guard and chairman of the United States Coast Guard Academy , raising eight children. Helen North is a widowed designer with ten children. When the two, who were already a couple in high school, meet again at a class reunion, they rediscover their love for each other, promptly marry and move into a dilapidated lighthouse , which is of course associated with problems, especially with the family of twenty. Both partial families have little to gain from the way of life and attitudes of the other. The Beardsleys are brought up in an authoritarian manner, follow commands and look exemplary but boring, they also know how their father was beaten. The Norths, raised to be anti-authoritarian, live out their creative style and expression freely, which seems wild and chaotic to outsiders. In addition, Helen strictly rejects corporal punishment. After initial tussles, the children band together in order to separate their parents again through various meanings.
The "North-Children" make Frank angry because of their informality and failure to follow Frank's rules. The "Beardsley Children" disturb Helen's creative chaos with their sense of order. Both of these affect the harmony of the newlyweds considerably. The climax comes when Frank and Helen go to a banquet at which he is offered the post of Supreme Commander of the Coast Guard (which he refuses, however). In their absence, the older children throw a sprawling party. In the resulting dispute, both become aware of their supposed differences and decide to part again. Frank convinces his superior to hand over the post as high commander to him. Almost too late, the North and Beardsley children realize how much they have already grown together as a family and decide to undo their actions. While the younger children apologize to Helen for their wrongdoing, the older children try to catch up with Frank's sailboat when he sets off on an inspection voyage on a coast guard ship. When Frank wants to explain that things could not be smoothed out, he sees the light of her lighthouse, which he had previously repaired, and returns to his wife. The film ends with a new wedding celebration in which both families celebrate together.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on November 22, 2005 that the remake lacks the "grace" and charm of the 1968 film. Frank and Helen's relationship would not seem real, the plot did not include a single moment is predictable.
"Remake of a conservative family comedy from 1967 ( yours, mine, ours ), which openly demonstrates military forms of organization in everyday life and shows a society that values functionality more than creativity."
