retreat
Most of the German soldiers of World War II buried in the cemetery were killed in retreat skirmishes in southern France as a result of Operation Dragoon , the landing of the Western Allies in Provence with code name: Anvil Dragoon . Some of those buried in Dagneux died at the Bataille de Meximieux in neighboring Meximieux . The retreat led to the western Alps and via Dijon to Alsace.
layout
19,847 German soldiers are buried in the cemetery, 814 of them in the ossuary (memorial). Of these 814 soldiers, 355 are not identified. The names of the 481 well-known German soldiers who are buried in the hall have been engraved on the floor of the building. There is also a bronze sculpture by Nikolaus Röslmeir in the hall .
The reburial of the bones of the German soldiers was completed in 1961, and the cemetery was officially inaugurated on October 26, 1963.
Events
Two important events take place during the year:
- In July , the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (in French: service pour l'entretien des sépultures militaires allemandes) organized a work camp for young people.
- A memorial service will be held in November.
German-French friendship
