The Chiara district is located in the Andahuaylas province in the Apurímac region in central southern Peru . The district was founded on April 5, 1935. It has an area of ​​147 km². The 2017 census counted 1238 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1537, in 2007 it was 1238. The district administration is located in the 3270  m high village of Chiara with 555 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chiara is 38 km southwest of the provincial capital Andahuaylas .

Geographical location

The district of Chiara is located in the Andean highlands in the southwest of the Andahuaylas province. The Río Chicha (also Río Soras) flows north along the western district boundary.

The district of Chiara is bordered to the west by the districts of San Salvador de Quije and Chilcayoc (both in the province of Sucre ), to the north by the districts of San Antonio de Cachi and Huancaray , to the east by the Tumay Huaraca district and to the south by the district of San Miguel de Chaccrampa .
