The district of Sancos is located in the province of Lucanas in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district has an area of ​​1504 km². The 2017 census counted 4,987 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2903, in 2007 it was 5548. The district administration is based in the 2817  m high village of Sancos with 429 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sancos is located 45 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Puquio .

Geographical location

The district of Sancos is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the east-south of the province of Lucanas. The Río Yauca flows south along the eastern district boundary and then crosses the south of the district. Its right tributary Río Paralmayoc crosses the district in the middle in a south-westerly direction. In the south, the district extends up to almost 33 km from the Pacific coast .

The district of Sancos is bordered in the southwest by the districts of Jaquí and Acarí (both in the province of Caravelí ), in the northwest and in the north by the district of San Pedro , in the northeast by the district of Chaviña and in the southeast by the district of Pullo ( province of Parinacochas ).
