action

When Hederl Tschöll took refuge in a small chapel from a thunderstorm, she made the acquaintance of Franz Schubert , whom the storm also surprised. Schubert is full of joy at the unexpected meeting and not only translates his feelings into a song, but also raves about the delightful girl to his friends in high tones. Schubert's friends then want to give a party and invite Hederl to it. But this does not occur. Schubert and his friends are invited to Anton Bruneder's wedding. Schubert has been asked to play the organ on this occasion. He likes to accept. At the subsequent celebration in the bride's father's house, he then believes that he cannot believe his eyes, the bride is “his keeper”.

Although he had to struggle with this disappointment, he accepted a renewed invitation from the master glazier Tschöll, who would like to bind the young musician closer to his house. When he enters the house, he is delighted by the singing of a young lady who turns out to be Hederl's sister Hannerl. Since he likes Hannerl's voice very much, he would like to train her to be a singer and Hannerl gratefully accepts. Both receive an invitation to the company of Baron Spaun to contribute to the entertainment of the guests with a performance. Schubert is very pleased and plays better than ever. Hannerl can hardly take her eyes off him while she sings. The Italian opera director Furlani is also present at the concert. He is not only enthusiastic about Hannerl's singing. The two dance exuberantly together. Furlani is determined to take Hannerl with him to Milan and put her there at the opera . That's what he's working towards.

In the years that followed, Schubert was a frequent visitor to the Tschöll house, he wanted to find out what his chances were of stopping Hannerl. Tschöll likes the young musician and assures him that he wouldn't speak against it from his side. In order to be able to look after Hannerl accordingly, Schubert applied for the position of court conductor. However, the influential Councilor Schauerhuber, with whom he had recently quarreled, thwarted his plans. Tschöll's third daughter Heiderl, who loves Schubert without hope, advises him to give a concert. Since Schubert does not have the necessary capital, Heiderl asks her father to advance the money to Schubert. The concert then takes place. Schubert conducts himself, as if in a trance , because shortly before he found out that Hannerl, whose hand he wanted to ask for, had gone to Milan with Furlani.

Heiderl follows the concert with deep emotion. She suspects that Schubert will never entirely belong to any woman, it is his wonderful music that he loses himself completely and that will always come first. And as a consolation, also for Schubert himself, the last stanza of his immortal wanderer fantasy sounds under his hands .

background

Rudolf Hans Bartsch's novel Schwammerl , which provided the basis for the film, was one of the most successful books before the Second World War . As early as 1916, the novel served as a template for the Singspiel by the composer Heinrich Berté with the title Das Dreimäderlhaus . This work, which premiered in Vienna in 1916, became a global success with performances in over 60 countries. The Singspiel was filmed several times.

The so-called "Dreimäderlhaus" in Vienna

The " Drei Mäderl Haus " in Vienna's Mölkerbastei is next to the Pasqualati House , where Beethoven mostly lived during his stay in Vienna. According to tradition, the affluent family Fröhlich lived in the "Drei Mäderl Haus" with their daughters Hannerl, Kati and Nanette. Their father is said to have obliged Franz Schubert to teach his daughters singing and piano. Schubert was a frequent guest there and a friend of the family. During Schubert's lifetime, the house was a well-known meeting place for Viennese interested in art. Franz Grillparzer is said to have had a liaison with Kati Fröhlich.

Historical background: Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was an Austrian composer. He was born the thirteenth of sixteen children. Schubert received violin and organ lessons from an early age. His talent for composition also crystallized early on. Because of his beautiful voice he was accepted as a choir boy . There he met many of his later friends such as Joseph von Spaun , Albert Stadler and Anton Holzapfel. He came into contact with Franz von Schober through his friend Spaun. His circle of friends, which was constantly expanding, included the painter Moritz von Schwind , the poet Johann Mayrhofer and the baritone Johann Michael Vogl , one of the most important singers at the Vienna Court Opera . Schubert also maintained close contact with the brothers Joseph Kupelwieser, his later librettist, and Leopold Kupelwieser , a painter by trade. It was not until 1827, a year before his death, that Schubert was persuaded by his friends to give his own concert, which promptly became a great success.

Production and Background

Filming began on May 12, 1936 and took place in Vienna and in the Vienna Woods in Austria . The premiere of the film in Germany was on August 4, 1936 in Berlin's atrium cinema. The Mölker Bastei is a district of Vienna that has remained unchanged. Parts of the film were also shot there. Hence the film title Mölkerbastei No. 3, which is common in Austria .

The production design comes from Fritz Maurischat and Karl Weber , Fred Lyssa was the production manager . Oskar Marion assisted director Emo, and Anton Weber was responsible for setting the film. The production company was Algefa −Film GmbH (Allgemeine Filmaufnahme- und Vertriebs-GmbH (Berlin)), whose founders were Paul Hörbiger , EW Emo and Karl Künzel . The film was first distributed by Syndikat-Film GmbH, Berlin.

Three girls around Schubert received the ratings "artistically valuable" and "people-educating" from the National Socialist film testing agency. The film was occasionally shown under the title Die vom Dreimäderlhaus .

In 1958, also in Austria, a remake of the operetta material was made under the title Das Dreimäderlhaus .

criticism

“Franz Schubert is sent by his publisher to the house of a Viennese court glazier to play the organ at the wedding of one of the three master’s daughters. To his grief, he discovers in the bride the lover whom he has secretly adored; Nor can he finally win the love of her two sisters. The film, a Biedermeier idyll overshadowed by a gentle melancholy, is pseudobiographical, but in the main role it is remarkable and musically richly decorated with freely arranged Schubert melodies. "

“Despite its biographical feel, the film is purely fictional and, above all, suffers from a number of weaknesses in terms of dramaturgy. But the main character is very well cast. Paul Hörbiger not only took on the role of composer, but also acted as producer. The popular frequent filmmaker made six more films this year, including 'Lumpacivagabundus' and 'Fiakerlied'. "
