The Driehaus Architecture Prize ( English Driehaus Architecture Prize ), short Driehaus Prize is an award for architecture . It is awarded annually to architects who have made particularly valuable and sustainable contributions in the areas of new classical and traditional architecture as well as new urbanism .

The prize, endowed with prize money of US $ 200,000 , was created in 2003 through the commitment of the philanthropist Richard Driehaus and is under the patronage of The Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust . It is handed over by the Notre Dame School of Architecture . The first prize winner was Léon Krier from Luxembourg , who also worked in Germany.

The winners of the 2018 award are the Franco-Belgian architects Marc Breitman and Nada Breitman-Jakov, who designed Le Plessis-Robinson , among others . The award ceremony took place in Chicago on March 25, 2018. The 2017 Driehaus Prize winner was the British architect Robert Adam from ADAM Architecture , who u. a. designed the Sackler Library in Oxford.

The full name of the award is The Richard H. Driehaus Prize at the University of Notre Dame . It was an alternative to the predominantly modernist aligned Pritzker Prize introduced in professional circles as a kind of "Architecture Nobel Prize" applies.

At the same time as the Driehaus Prize, the US $ 50,000 Henry Hope Reed Award (“Reed Prize” for short) will be presented. This award is given to people who “work outside of the architecture profession and have supported the cultivation of the traditional city as well as its architecture and art”, for example through scientific and journalistic contributions. In 2018, Torsten Kulke received the Reed Award from the Gesellschaft Historischer Neumarkt Dresden (GHND).

Driehaus Prize

The Driehaus Prize is awarded to living architects whose work embodies the principles of traditional and classic architecture and human-friendly urbanism in the present, and who creates a lasting positive cultural, environmentally friendly and artistic influence.

The prize is awarded annually in the spring from the University of Notre Dame associated School of Architecture presented and, presented in Chicago, the hometown of Richard Driehaus.

The trophy is a bronze miniature of the Lysicrates Monument of Athens , which is considered to be the first external application of the Corinthian order . It will be presented together with the prize money.
