Edmond Farhat
Edmond Y. Farhat (born May 20, 1933 in Ain Kfaa near Byblos , Lebanon , † December 17, 2016 in Rome ) was a Maronite clergyman and diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
Edmond Farhat studied theology , philosophy and canon law in Paris and Rome . On March 28, 1959, the Patriarch of Antioch ordained him a priest . He became a doctor of theology doctorate and between 1967 and 1989 Employees and undersecretary of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops in Rome, and from 1970 to 1989 Professor of Islamic Law at the State University of Sassari (Italy). Pope Paul VI bestowed on him on February 26, 1971 the title of chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ); on November 25, 1983, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness.
On August 26, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Delegate for Libya and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio for Tunisia and Algeria, and Titular Archbishop of Byblus . On October 20, 1989, the Pope personally donated him episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Edward Idris Cassidy and the Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, Archbishop Francesco Colasuonno .
On July 26, 1995 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia and Macedonia . In this capacity he was also the mediator in Macedonia of diplomatic relations between the sovereign Order of Malta and the young republic, which officially recognized the order. On December 11, 2001, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Turkmenistan and Turkey . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on July 26, 2005 to succeed Archbishop Georg Zur, who retired for reasons of age, as Apostolic Nuncio in Austria .
On January 14, 2009, Benedict XVI. Farhat's age-related resignation from the office of Apostolic Nuncio in Austria with effect from March 15, 2009. On December 17, 2016, he died in Rome after a long illness.
Act
Edmond Farhat was known as an expert on the conditions in the Middle East . During his tenure in Turkey he spoke out in favor of Turkey joining the EU , but warned in sharp words that religious freedom should be observed in the secular state. In Turkey, acts of violence and death threats against Christians are the order of the day, and the repression of Christian intellectuals is not uncommon. In order to give in, Christians in Europe must raise their profile.
He has been a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints since 2009 .
