Eduard Ernst Louis von Westernhagen (born November 24, 1851 in Abbendorf ; † October 23, 1921 ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

He was the son of the royal chief forester Thilo von Westernhagen (1804–1872) and his wife Rosa, née Bogen (1816–1895).

Military career

Westernhagen attended the Roßleben monastery school . At the beginning of the war against France in July 1870 he joined the replacement battalion of the 3rd Posenen Infantry Regiment No. 58 of the Prussian Army in Glogau as an avantageur . With the regiment he took part in the siege of Paris from November 22, 1870 to January 21, 1871 .

After the peace treaty , Westernhagen became second lieutenant on March 9, 1872 . From 1877 to 1880 he was assigned to the Potsdam War School as an inspection officer . After being promoted to Prime Lieutenant , Westernhagen graduated from the War Academy for three years from October 1881 . With his promotion to captain on December 13, 1888, he was transferred to Infantry Regiment No. 137 stationed in Hagenau . Here Westernhagen acted as chief of the 3rd company. In the same capacity, he was transferred to Breslau on January 27, 1894 to the grenadier regiment "Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm" (2nd Silesian) No. 11 . Promoted to major there on June 18, 1895 , Westernhagen was transferred a year later as battalion commander in the 4th Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 51 , which was also stationed in Breslau . With the formation of the Infantry Regiment. 156 Westlife took effect on 1 April 1897 with further officers and men to this new, in Brieg stationed Association over. He was in command of the 2nd Battalion until June 15, 1901 and then came to Graudenz to the headquarters of the Kulm Infantry Regiment No. 141 . Here he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on July 7, 1901, and on June 14, 1904, when he was promoted to colonel, he was commander of this regiment. On July 27, 1908, Westernhagen was ordered to represent the sick commander of the 19th Infantry Brigade Paul Albrecht in Poznan . On August 18, 1908, he was promoted to major general and was appointed commander of this large unit . On the occasion of the order festival in 1910, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, on January 18, 1910 for his services in the troop leadership. In approval of his leave request Westlife was awarded the character as Lieutenant General on 20 March 1911, the statutory pension for disposition made.

During the First World War he was reused as a zD officer. Westernhagen initially led the detachment named after him on the Eastern Front and, after budgeting, the 89th Infantry Division formed from it until October 4, 1915.

He was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

family

Westernhagen was married to Clara, born Sentker (* 1863). The four sons Thilo (* 1884), Edel (* 1888), Kurt (1891–1945) and Gero (* 1904) emerged from the marriage.
