The Eichenberger Forest Railway is one of the syndicate light railway operated (IGF) light railway in Eichenberg in Hesse Werra-Meissner , but is almost exclusively in the municipality of Friedland in Lower Saxony Göttingen district . It has a track width of 600 mm.

Geographical location

The field railway land is located east-northeast of Eichenberg station on the northern slopes of the north of the border triangle Hesse-Thuringia Lower- lying forged heads ( 251.6  m above sea level.  NHN ). With the exception of small western parts of the system, which are located in the Eichenberger area (Hesse), it is located in the Friedlander area (Lower Saxony) immediately south of the Eichenberger Gleisdreieck, in which the Halle – Hann. Münden and Göttingen – Bebra collide.

The approach to the field railway is only possible via Hottenrode and is signposted from the traffic light in Hohengandern. From the Eichenberg train station, a 15-minute walk takes you along Eichsfelder Straße, first to the southeast corner of the Gleisdreieck at Hottenrode and then to the entrance to the field railway in the east.

history

Narrow gauge track of the Eichenberger Waldbahn

The interest group with 23 members has been concerned with the maintenance and operation of forest and field railway vehicles since 1986. Since 1989 it has been laying narrow-gauge tracks on a site that was initially leased and purchased in 1999 to enable forest and field railroad operations and to give visitors an insight into the meaning and use of these rail vehicles. After a procedure that lasted from 1996 to 2000, the district of Göttingen approved the entire facility.

Rail vehicles

The restoration of the rail vehicles is a focus of activities, so that so far 12 diesel locomotives, a benzene railcar and a motor trolley based on a Trabant have been exhibited. Nine of the mostly restored or reconstructed locomotives are operational. In June 2016 the Strüver with a Deutz four-stroke engine was completed and brought to the site. Since the end of 2011, the Waldbahn has also owned a Krauss steam locomotive, which is currently undergoing a general overhaul lasting several years.
