Ekaveli is the third solo album by Mönchengladbach rapper Eko Fresh . It was released on November 23, 2007 and was Eko Fresh's first release for the Bushido- operated label Ersguterjunge .

History of origin

In 2006 the album Hart (z) IV was released on the Sony BMG subsidiary Subword, which specialized in hip-hop. Before that, Eko Fresh had worked with Bushido's label Ersguterjunge. He was represented on the two label samplers Vendetta and Nemesis . At the end of 2006 he finally signed with Bushido.

The name Ekaveli is an allusion to Makaveli , the stage name of the murdered rapper Tupac Shakur , which he used for his last album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (1996). This was also an allusion to the Italian philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli .

The GermanDream house producers Kingsize, Prodycem, Capkekz and Ground Zero contributed most of the music . Other beats came from Flashgordon from Hamburg , Bock auf'n Beat from Frankfurt am Main and from Serious Sam, who was previously a producer for Eko Fresh. Also Beatlefield consisting of Chakuza and DJ Stickle , the former house producers of Ersguterjunge had with Until I lie under the ground portion of the album. Most of the feature guests were signed to Eko's label “German Dream” at the time. Capkekz, SDiddy , Farid Bang , La-Honda, G-Style, Hakan Abi and Summer Cem from the German Dream label contributed a feature. Other guest contributions were R&B singer Ado Kojo , Gangsta Luv and Karim. In addition, Bushido could be won for a feature on the first single ring . As a special surprise, Eko Fresh managed to win a Tel from 2Pacs group Outlawz as a feature guest.

Music genre

Ekaveli is a concept album and a big bow to Eko Fresh's favorite rapper 2Pac. The majority of the beats on the album are therefore heavily based on West Coast hip-hop of the 1990s and contain elements of G-Funk . The beats sound sometimes anthemic ( ring free ), sometimes classic ( Until I'm underground ), sometimes melancholy ( I'm sorry ) or even dark ( West Coast ). In addition, the two rappers Edi Amin and Young Noble could be won by 2Pac's old crew Outlawz , who appear as “Tha Outlawz”. There are also some parallels in the text. In addition, Eko Fresh used a throatier, deeper rap style on this album, which also strives for a similarity to the rap icon 2Pac.

The soulful everyone falls out of the ordinary and so I can't work with Eko singing over an acoustic guitar beat with a vocalist. Even without you , who samples the classic of the same name by the group Münchener Freiheit , deviates from the concept. Eko Fresh transforms the love song into an ode to hashish consumption .

Video and single releases

Only one video for the first single Ring frei (feat. Bushido) was shot for the album . The video alternately shows Eko Fresh rapping in the boxing ring and a wrestling match .

Ekaveli reached number 100 on the German album charts . The single release Ring frei reached 64th place, its highest chart listing in the single charts . While Eko still had 2 videos on the last album Hart (z) IV , the failure to promote Ekaveli stopped after the first video. The album is next to the collaboration album Dünya Dönüyor - The world is turning with Azra , which did not even reach the charts, the album with the lowest chart positions.

Shortly afterwards, the business relationship with Bushido broke up and Eko Fresh lost his record deal. In addition to the lack of success of the album, ghostwriting allegations raised by rapper La Honda were responsible for the break with Bushido. In an interview with Hiphop.de, the two members of La Honda claimed in an interview with Hiphop.de that Eko Fresh Bushido had written three albums until he poached Kay One as a new ghostwriter directly from Eko Fresh. In addition, he did not support Eko Fresh sufficiently. Eko fresh did not contradict this representation, which ultimately had its part in the break.

Eko Fresh later announced the end of his career on Myspace and justified this with the weak sales figures, among other things. He just wanted to do the promo for SDiddy's album 21 grams and then retire from the rap scene. He later refrained from this step.

Reviews

Not only the lack of commercial success makes the album appear as a weak album in Eko Fresh's back catalog. The criticism wasn't particularly enthusiastic either. Philipp Gässlein only awarded two stars on Laut.de. Although he praised the beats, he still came to the following conclusion:

“The problem: For a classic, great beats also need a ...? N / A? Exactly: great rapper. If you look at the music from his early days, Eko could even give it. Why he doesn't do it, why he doesn't finally learn to stand by himself, his style and, above all, his voice, probably nobody but himself knows. It's definitely sad, because these beats would have a liberating, outrageous Eko Fresh (like on "Ein Tag") much sooner than the attempted clone of a rapper who has been dead for ten years - and who apparently still manages to release records quite well on his own. "

- Philipp Gässlein : Laut.de criticism

The daily Heilbronner Voice described the album as solid and better in rap style than its predecessors:

“It's hard to believe that Eko, who has changed image every year, should finally have found his niche. So it is not easy for the record to be taken seriously. Nevertheless - or maybe because of that - "Ekaveli" deserves respect: Eko serves well-rounded and technically solid rap tracks that quote hackneyed ghetto clichés, but otherwise don't follow any trend. Could work."

- Gregor Jossé : Heilbronn voice

Years later, Eko Fresh himself described the album as a mistake:

"That was an insider thing about me and my mates back then - maybe it should have been left at that."

- Eko Fresh : Juice
