Elke Wehr (translator)
Elke Wehr (* 1946 in Bautzen ; † June 27, 2008 in Berlin ) was a German translator .
Life
Elke Wehr grew up in the GDR ; In 1961 the family fled to West Germany . Elke Wehr studied Romance studies in Paris and Heidelberg , initially with a focus on French and Italian . Inspired by Rudolf Wittkopf , she later concentrated on Spanish . Since the 1970s , she has been translating a large number of Spanish and Latin American prose authors into German , including Javier Marías and Mario Vargas Llosa . Elke Wehr, who take turns in Madridand lived in Berlin, received the Paul Celan Prize in 2006 for her work in translation .
