The Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium (short: EKG ) is a state high school in the city of Adenau , not far from the Nürburgring . It is named after Erich Klausener , who was a district administrator in the Adenau district and who resisted the National Socialist regime in Germany.

Almost 800 students are currently attending the EKG, which is why the school was last expanded to include two classrooms in 2008. The school has 50 teachers. The current rector of the Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium is Christa Killmaier-Heimermann. (Status: 2010/11 school year)

history

founding

The Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium was founded in April 1914 as a higher private school . The founder was Wilhelm Kaussen from Oberforstbach in the Aachen district . In 1916 the newly founded school had to struggle with personnel difficulties due to the First World War . In the same year the founder, who was called into the army, handed over the EKG to the clergyman Otto Dahmen, who ran the school until 1920. In 1920 and 1921, Karl Ernst headed the institution, but Ernst, who came from Mettmann , emigrated to South America . With August Lellmann from Andernach , who took over the office of rector in spring 1921, the EKG experienced the fourth rector since it was founded in 1914.

In 1926, after painstaking construction work, the Adenau community took over as the municipal rectorate school, which was converted into a municipal secondary school in 1940 . Initially, this school only had classes from sixth to fourth . The school was given technical advice by the director of the Ahrweiler boys' high school. After the Second World War , an independent Progymnasium for boys and girls was created by building a sub-secondary school , which was an institution of the city of Adenau until nationalization in April 1960 . In 1956 the new rector could hope for the new building of the institute, although he took over this grammar school when it was in financial difficulties. Even before the nationalization, preliminary planning work for the construction of the new school began through an initiative of the state and the district.

In 1960 an on-site meeting was held in Adenau with representatives of the Ministry for Education and Culture, the District Administrator Ahrweiler, and the city of Adenau. In March 1961, the Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler district announced an ideas competition for designs for the new building, which in October of the same year selected the winner from 17 submissions. The architecture firm Mirbach from Düren was selected for the construction . In January 1964 the earthworks for the new high school began, on April 20th with the concrete and masonry work.

In the same year, the district of Ahrweiler expressed the wish that the Progymnasium should be given the name of the former district administrator Erich Klausener after the new building , as Klausener is still remembered by the population due to his long tenure in Adenau. On November 16, 1964, after 160 working days, the topping-out ceremony on the new school building was celebrated. On July 11, 1966, the Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium was officially inaugurated.

At the beginning of September 1966, the new building was open for viewing on an open day . In the meantime, District Administrator Heinz Korbach , the elected representatives and the parents' council tried to increase the gymnasium as soon as possible. In November of the same year the school was informed that in December 1966 the expansion into a full institution would begin. On August 1, 1967, the school received a lower class , followed by an upper class on August 1, 1968 .

From 1969 until today

After the change from the Progymnasium to the full high school and the renaming of the school after the former District Administrator Erich Klausener in Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium , the first graduate class left the school in 1969. In 1978, as part of the introduction of the Mainz study level , the school received an extension, which improved the work opportunities in the natural sciences . In the 1990s, further expansion measures were necessary as the number of students at the school increased every year. The school's own teaching pool was closed and restructured into a gym. At the beginning of the new millennium, the entire roof of the school was equipped with solar cells and the energy obtained from them was fed into its own power grid. In 1997 the school received the title of ecological high school . Since 2004, the grammar school has had two further classes, which are located at the neighboring elementary school after a further extension. In 2008 two more classes were added to the main school building. Modernization work has been carried out on the course rooms for the natural sciences since 2010. After the rampage in Winnenden in March 2009, the school received a new security system to prevent rampage .

Between June 30, 2014 and July 4, 2014 the Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium organized a topic-specific project week as the facility celebrated its 100th anniversary. On the last day of the project week, a celebration with public viewing took place on the occasion of the anniversary, as the World Cup quarter-finals between Germany and France were held on this day .

In that year, the Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium was recognized as a Fairtrade School. At the beginning of 2018, when the criteria were reviewed, it was decided that the school could continue to bear the Fairtrade School rating.

classes

For the orientation and intermediate level, lessons take place from 7:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. In grades 9 and 10 there are afternoon classes once or twice a week (to get the students used to the upper grades). For the upper level ( Mainz study level (MSS)), lessons usually end between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

foreign languages

The EKG offers English , French , Latin and, formerly, Spanish (only as an AG) as foreign languages . Real school students who switch to the EKG after the tenth grade and cannot prove a second foreign language have the opportunity to catch up on this in the upper school. You can choose between French and Latin, which is taken as a "zero" course from MSS 11 onwards. If a student has already received French lessons at the Realschule, this cannot be included in "French 0", but in "Latin 0".

Sports

The school shares the common sports hall with the primary school in Adenau. The school is also permitted to use the gym of the TuWi Adenau sports club for sports lessons.

Working groups (AGs)

The EKG currently offers the following working groups:

  • Handball
  • School band
  • Spanish
  • theatre
  • Cross-country skiing
  • School orchestra
  • Wikipedia
  • Bees AG
  • Robot AG (former)

Partner schools

Every year there are student exchanges between the EKG Adenau and the Collège de la forêt from Kédange, as well as an exchange with a school from Łódź and the partner school in Miami .

Educational and social projects and events

Environmental awareness

Since 1996 the grammar school has been sponsoring Bach , which is integrated into the teaching across disciplines, from 2003 also in the tenth grade. The aim is continuous occupation with the topic of water from the 5th to the 10th grade.

In 1999 a sustainability audit of the nationwide project Education for Sustainable Development was carried out , which is still being carried out in teaching. The aim is to bring school resources, such as water, energy or outdoor facilities, and behaviors closer to the students from an ecological, economic, social and global perspective.

In 2000 the school initiated the solar project with a photovoltaic system , which five years later was able to double the capacity. The expansion was financed through the savings made during the sustainability audit .

Since 2002, the EKG has been involved in various topics in the Agenda 21 process of the Adenau community.

solidarity

Since 1999 the school has held a sponsored walk that takes place every two years. The walk has been called the Erich-Klausener-Lauf since 2009 . Proceeds from the run will be donated to several charitable activities including Hogar de Niños in Buenos Aires , Argentina , the Light Bridge , AMEPH-Togo , African Angel and a project called Vannakam! - A hospital for Maiyanur . In the seven races so far, the school was able to donate over 100,000 euros.

The EKG also participates in the learning workshop of the Realschule Plus Adenau, whereby the aim is to make it easier for future school leavers in the ninth and tenth grades to enter professional life.

For 2010, the school took part in the non-violent learning project.

To help the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake , MSS12 students sold sandwiches on January 28, 2010, the proceeds of which were donated.

Projects

Vanakkam!

The project was started in September 1998 by a group of 10 students who took part in a work camp in South India and lived for several weeks in the village of Maiyanur . The catastrophic situation of basic medical care in the region was decisive for the establishment of the Vanakkam association ! Help for Maiyanur eV . The aim of the association was to build and maintain an infirmary in the immediate vicinity.

Since 2001 the EKG has been committed to the goal of the association with donations collected through the Sponsored Walk. With the funding, an entire floor could be built, a well for water supply, a laboratory, a nurses' accommodation and a seamstress school.

AMEPH-TOGO

AMEPH-TOGO has been involved in the education of children whose parents have to deal with disabilities (e.g. blindness ) since 2001 . AMEPH-TOGO is a self-help organization that aims to help disabled families - primarily their children. Initially, the association helped 17 children, today there are 144. The association also supports a school for the blind in Sokodé . The Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium is, according to the school chronicle, the most important partner of the association in Germany .

African Angel

Since 2010 the school has supported the African Angel project , which takes care of street children from the slums of Bukom near Accra , the capital of Ghana . The aim is to offer the children good accommodation with an education. The initiator of the project is Harriet Bruce-Annan , who won the readers' award from the magazine Bild der Frau Heldin des Everyday . She lives in Düsseldorf and was able to build a children's home for 56 children in Ghana's capital; a second building should be completed in 2011. After Bruce-Annan had already attended school in 2010, he was again at the Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium on December 3, 2011 and gave a lecture from her new book in the Hocheifelhalle not far from the school.

In 2017 it was said that 62 children were living in the African Angel children's home. This now has three floors and access to the water for sanitary facilities. The establishment of an in-house library is planned.

Hogar de Niños

The Hogar de Niños project, launched in 1999, supports the Maria Luisen Children's Home in Buenos Aires , the capital of Argentina . Initially this project mainly helped children from needy German-speaking families in Buenos Aires. Today, Hogar de Niños cares for children without any racial or religious barriers of any origin. The children in this children's home are looked after and taught.

Publicity

On December 20, 2010, the CDU politician Mechthild Heil visited the grammar school, where she took part in a hearing with high school students.

For several years the school has organized its own school ball (EKG ball). This takes place annually on the evening before Women's Thursday . The EKG ball has been visited by thousands of visitors in recent years. After the accident at the Love Parade in 2010 , it was decided due to safety regulations to only allow 300 visitors, who must, however, be current or former students of the school. Through student surveys it was determined that the 2011 EKG ball would be canceled under the given conditions. The future of the EKG ball is currently unclear.

In addition, the high school had the Nohles Groove Band , a school cover association, which has previously released a CD. In 2010 the band flew to Malta , where they gave several concerts. Malta's Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi visited the musicians of the school band during their stay in Mellieha .

For several years now, the Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium has been supporting the neighboring elementary school with "Advent Singing", where since 1981 pupils from the 1st to the 4th grade have been singing various Christmas carols. The donation proceeds are donated to various non-profit organizations. The local citizen channel is also present at this event. On December 10, 2011, Advent Singing celebrated its 30th anniversary. It takes place in the St. John the Baptist Church in Adenau .

The school band Project Entertainment has existed since 2011 and consists of high school students. The group currently plays on a regional level and is considered a cover band. On May 16, 2013, Project Entertainment played for the first time in front of a larger audience as part of Adenauer Racing Day , after the group had their first appearance on November 11, 2012 at the Martinsmarkt in Adenau. The group is led by music teacher Martin Baack. By winning a local band competition, the group won a studio recording.
