Erman okay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erman Okay (born November 30, 1939 or January 1, 1940 in Izmir ) is a Turkish actor , author , director and theater founder who worked in Germany for a long time. The bilingual family series Korkmazlar, shown on German television, is part of his extensive oeuvre . Moreover, he is one of the founders of today, the Turkish Film Festival Munich aligning SinemaTürk .

Life

Erman Okay was studying prehistory and antiquity at Ankara University when he was already appearing as a stage actor. Under Münip Senyücel and Özdemir Nutku , he played at Theater Ankara Deneme in plays such as Count Albany by Donald Carswell , Sorry, Wrong Number by Lucille Fletcher and La Dame de Bronze et le Monsieur de cristal ou Seul by Henri Duvernois . In 1961 he joined the professional theater Ankara Meydan , for which he appeared on stage in Peter Ustinov's Romanoff and Juliet and Cahit Atays Karaların Memetleri .

After completing his archeology studies and doing military service, Okay founded his own children's theater Binbirgece (German: Thousand and One Nights ) in Ankara in 1968 . When he moved to Munich in 1981, the stage worker was already considered an "important representative of Turkish youth theater". In Turkey he had done entertaining and educational work in radio, first as editor and spokesman for Radio Ankara, then for the Turkish TV station TRT in Ankara, which also employed him as one of his first presenters. Later there was an activity in the field of newspaper journalism in Istanbul under Mete Akyol .

In Germany, Okay turned to Turkish-language literature, education and information programs on audio cassettes from the Association Cassette Programs for Foreign Citizens , for which he was active as a speaker as well as an author or director for almost two decades, initially primarily to Turks living in Germany. Regardless of nationality and origin, he repeatedly campaigned for the promotion of minorities and also strived to reach a German audience.

In this context, Okay founded the mixed-cultural Turkish theater group at the Theater der Jugend der Münchner Schauburg in 1982, which he directed until 1987 , for their first performance - a "play about the history and situation of migrant families" that he wrote himself - by distributing 2000 Leaflets in the Bavarian metropolis advertised missing actors and employees. Erman Okay's Das Land der Träume - Düşler Ülkesi premiered on December 18, 1982. The production was awarded the “Star of the Week” by the Münchner Abendzeitung and was shown in Kempten, Stuttgart, Rosenheim and Hamburg as well as in Munich. After a performance of Sevgi Soysal's Women on Venus in the following year, alongside other productions with Babür ile / and Sabür (author, director and actor: Erman Okay), a particular audience success followed, which was also distributed in a video version of the Munich Atlas Film . The play was performed at the international children and youth theater meeting “Schau Spiele 85” and played around fifty times until 1986.

At the same time, Christiane Ohaus directed Ermans Okays German radio play Vogelfrei for RIAS Berlin , which ran in 1986 on the broadcaster's regular program. Taking up the motif of the chalk circle test, it described the legal case of a child who grew up in Germany and who is to be brought back to Turkey against his will. As speaker in a German radio play had previously Okay one year in widow Zibulskys dream to Edgar Hilsenrath heard in the role of the Turks. He has long appeared as an actor on German television, e. B. in the family series Our Neighbors, the Baltas (1984), episodes of the crime film series Der Fahnder (from 1985) and the TV film Betrogene Liebe (1986).

In 1988, on the initiative of the association, cassette programs for foreign citizens Erman Okays bilingual feature film series Korkmazlar was realized, which was initially only intended for cassette distribution. The "video film series with integrated German learning opportunities for Turkish families", which is linked to popular family entertainment programs, aroused keen interest among the target audience, particularly through regular appearances by Turkish stars. Okay was also involved as an author in the lavishly produced magazines that accompanied the series, as well as in the practice cassettes that support language acquisition. The trade press saw the “integration of language learning opportunities in a feature film” as a novelty and praised “the unusual concept for a language motivational film”. After Bayerischer Rundfunk had watched the films about "a Turkish family in Germany", the later German-language subtitle of the series, it also found its way into the evening program of German television, where it appeared in all third programs as well as on 1plus and in 3sat was shown.

The method developed by Okay in Germany to reach a linguistically mixed audience through the presentation of the "reality of bilingualism" in the theater, in the film or on audio cassettes, has been recognized as groundbreaking in the international specialist literature on intercultural education. The author's work on this was published in other media combinations by the mid-2000s, including at Beltz and the school book publisher Anadolu , such as Keloǧlan und der Riese (1991), Eins von mir - one von dir / Bir benden - bir send (1992 and 2004) and Keloǧlan and Little Red Riding Hood (2004). They are recommended to this day as teaching aids for intercultural language teaching.

The establishment of the SinemaTürk Filmzentrum in Munich, in which Erman Okay played a major role in 1989, was also intended to promote cultural exchange. At a time when there were hardly any Turkish dubbed or subtitled Turkish films available in the Federal Republic of Germany, the association set itself the task of making "Turkish-language films of high artistic quality and content" accessible to a German-speaking audience by means of its own dubbed versions. As the organizer of the Turkish Film Festival Munich, which has meanwhile become a fixture in Munich's cultural life, one was also repeatedly involved in the discovery of still unknown film directors from Germany, especially in the context of a so-called German-Turkish cinema . Okay also appeared sporadically as a film director and in the early 1990s he staged such diverse works as the long documentary about the Greek writer Dido Sotiriou The Scent of Things (1991, together with Thomas Balkenhol ) and the three Turkish cartoons with a German-language one Framework story connecting Nasreddin Hoca in the traveling cinema (1992, together with Robert Hältner ).

Erman Okay's preferred place of work remained the theater, be it as a mediator of the Karagöz , as a processor of fairy tale material such as in the case of Allem Kallem (1990), which was later also played in Turkey , as the "author of original children's theater pieces " such as Nasrettin Hoca (first staged in 1989 by Orhan Güner at the Theater der Jugend) or as a director of his own and third-party plays such as Behic Ak's Trennkost für Former 2000 in the gap-Werkraum Munich. Okay's diverse stage work in Germany also included the conception and staging of a music-accompanied reading of Nazim Hikmet's poems in German as well as in Turkish, English, Russian and French for the Transit Theater in 2001, as well as numerous appearances as an actor - except in his own theater works also in the role of Bassa Selim in a French production of Mozart's Singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail 1999 in Munich.

He was also given leading roles as a film actor, be it as Kemal in the German feature film Die Distel (1992) or the main character in Baumann's Doppelfehler (1993), an episode from the ARD series Stories from Home . In the film Leben, Liebe, Tod (1996) nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize , Okay also played the father of the main character portrayed by Idil Üner and he was also involved in Hans Christian Müller's biting satire Willkommen in Kronstadt (1996). He continued to be seen in some larger guest roles in TV series, in 1992 again in the Fahnder , but also in Zwei Brüder (1994) or the TV award-winning Tatort In derfallen (1998). Okay's most recent appearances as an actor in German film productions include the award-winning short feature film Weites Meer (2001) by Emre Koca and the TV series Deutsch Klasse (2003), which was first broadcast on BR-alpha .

With regard to his educational commitment in the Federal Republic of Germany, the artist often worked closely with German institutions, including federal and state ministries , the Federal Labor Office and the State Institute for Early Education , was involved in educational concepts, was involved in the creation of language and Involved in learning aids and active as a consultant or translator. His continuous commitment to the association Cassette Programs for Foreign Citizens finally included such diverse tasks as a Turkish course for Germans Wir speak Turkish (1988, with Özgür Savaṣc̣ı ), the radio play about AIDS education Yaşamak güzel şey (1992) and the sound control of the SAID CD The Salt of My Hands (1999).

In the meantime, after almost a quarter of a century of passionate work in Germany, Erman Okay lives again in Turkey, where he continues to work as an artist. In recent years he has achieved great fame here as a television actor, impersonating Yılmaz Hancıoğlu in the popular FOX series Yer Gök Aşk (2010-2013). As Zafer Ar he has also been seen in a series lead role in the no less popular family comedy drama production Kocamın Ailesi since 2014 . The long-time theater mime also played the soft-hearted grandpa Zafer in various commercials for the Langnese ice cream brand .

Quotes

“My previous theater work with and for foreigners has shown that different cultures can develop side by side and can mutually stimulate each other if the opportunity is offered. But the prerequisites require external support and support, at least at the beginning. If the development of the different cultures side by side is not encouraged, the suspicion arises that the aim is not to integrate cultures, but to adapt all cultures to one culture. But for a harmonious, democratic coexistence, the integration of all cultures is a prerequisite and this includes the promotion of minorities.
