Ernst Otto von Trotha (born June 24, 1819 in Neu-Beesen , † January 29, 1903 in Schkopau ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and legal knight of the Order of St. John .

Life

Ernst was the youngest son of the Prussian Rittmeister Otto von Trotha (1778–1862) and his wife Wilhelmine, born von Boden (1785–1873). The later Prussian major general Thilo von Trotha (1814–1888) was his brother.

Military career

Trotha attended grammar school in Brandenburg an der Havel and the pedagogy in Halle (Saale) . On January 11, 1837, he joined the Guard Jäger battalion of the Prussian Army in Potsdam and was promoted to second lieutenant until mid-September 1838 . At the end of March 1841 he was aggregated to the 10th Hussar Regiment and three years later assigned to the association . Trotha rose to prime lieutenant in mid-July 1853 and was commanded from October 14, 1854 to March 12, 1859 as a squadron leader in the 10th Landwehr Hussar Regiment in Aschersleben . As Rittmeister, he was then appointed squadron chief in the 8th Hussar Regiment . During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , he was the leader of the 2nd Squadron of the mobile 8th Landwehr Hussar Regiment. On May 12, 1860, Trotha was assigned to the 1st Combined Dragoon Regiment in the same capacity, from which the Rhenish Dragoon Regiment (No. 5) was formed with the budgeting on July 4, 1860 . Until September 27, 1863 he was chief of the 2nd Squadron in Salzwedel and was then transferred to the 2nd Silesian Uhlan Regiment No. 2 . In this position he took part in the battle of Königgrätz during the war against Austria in the same year and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords. One year after the peace treaty , he was entrusted with the management of the Oldenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 19 under position à la suite . Trotha was appointed regimental commander on December 10, 1867 and was promoted to colonel by the end of July 1870 .
