The Estadio Presidente Perón is the club's own football stadium of the Argentine football club Racing Club from Avellaneda , the capital of the Avellaneda administrative region in the province of Buenos Aires . In addition to the official name, the sports facility is also called El Cilindro ( German  The Cylinder ) or El Coliseo ( German  The Coliseum ) because of its shape . The facility is located just a few hundred meters from the Estadio Libertadores de América , where the CA Independiente plays.

history

The stadium was opened on September 3, 1950 with the game Racing Club Avellaneda against Vélez Sársfield (1-0). At that time the arena held 100,000 spectators. A year later, the first Pan American Games were opened in 1951 by the Argentine President and namesake Juan Perón and his wife Eva Perón .

On the occasion of the inauguration of the floodlights , the Racing Club and FC Bayern Munich (3: 2) met in a friendly match in 1966 . 1967 defeated Racing Club Avellaneda in the final of the Copa Libertadores Nacional Montevideo from Uruguay . So they played in the World Cup final against Celtic Glasgow from Scotland in the same year and won three games. At the last game, 115,000 spectators are said to have been in the stadium. The Racing Club reached the first final of the Supercopa Sudamericana in 1988 against the Brazilian team Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte and won the cup on a round trip.

In 1995 the roofing of the stadium began. The transparent roof spans the entire auditorium. For this purpose, the floodlight system was renewed. The Estadio Presidente Perón is the first fully covered stadium in Argentina. This work was completed in 1997. At 105 × 78 meters, the playing field is one of the largest in Argentina. In 2002 the stadium got a video surveillance system inside and outside. Due to some renovations as well as safety requirements of the Argentine association Asociación del Fútbol Argentino , the capacity fell to 64,161 places. As the first stadium in Argentina, the fence in front of the stands was removed in 2004.

Arsenal de Sarandí reached the 2007 Copa Sudamericana final against Club América from Mexico . The second leg took place in the larger Estadio Presidente Perón , as Arsenal's stadium only holds around 16,000 spectators. A year later, Arsenal moved again to the city neighbor, because they played the final of the Recopa Sudamericana against Boca Juniors . Today the venue is approved for 51,389 spectators.
