particularities European biogenetic reserve

The Europe and nature reserve as well as the Gerzkopf biogenetic reserve is a reserve on the Gerzkopf  ( 1728  m above sea level ), a foothill of the Dachstein massif , in the state of Salzburg .

Location and landscape

The protected area is around 91  hectares around the Gerzkopf summit, in the Fritztal Mountains of the Salzburg Slate Alps . This is a foothill of the Dachstein near the Bischofsmütze ( Kalkhochalpen ), but is part of the landscape of the slate Alps. These are actually part of the Grauwackenzone , but geologically the Gerzkopf is part of the Werfen strata , so it also belongs to the limestone Alps system (Alpine red sandstone and Werfen quartzite ). Both systems, the slate zone as well as the Werfener zone, build up the characteristic round peaks of the inner-alpine Salzburg grass and forest mountains between Dachstein and Tyrolean Inntal. The summit corridor at 1700 m is already in the area of the north alpine tree line , so that the forest is already showing signs of high alpine, loose stand and stunted growth.

The protected area is a subalpine moor area . This was caused by the limestone scarcity of the rock, the rain-rich, cool climate and - due to the ridge location - the absence of nutrient-rich slope and seepage water on the plateau created by glacial erosion. This form of a summit bog is very rare. There is also a stagnant body of water known as Black Lacquer in the reserve .

The communities of Annaberg-Lungötz , Eben im Pongau , Filzmoos and Sankt Martin am Tennengebirge have a share in the protected area. The protected area no longer belongs to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage area of Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut around the Dachstein.

Protection and reasons for protection

The area is protected because, in addition to its aesthetic value, it has a very rare type of bog. In addition, there are habitats of various rare plant and animal species.

The summit region has been a nature reserve since 1981 ( NSG 3 , 90.8275 ha). Since July 1, 2006, it has been registered to the same extent in the Natura 2000 network according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive  (FFH) ( AT3213003, Salzburg No. ESG 11 ). At the same time, it was also reported in the European Network of Biogenetic Reserves  (EWC) ( no number , same area), in which a representative selection of habitats of typical, unique, rare or threatened species across Europe is particularly recorded.
